(Solved) no /login
« on: September 14, 2010, 12:06:08 am »

I downloaded the 1.7 release and istalled it. After that I clicked on the link to login snews/login/
there's a Broken link cause no file or directory with that name.
All links dont work, maybe because of mod_rewrite not setup?

Have to say that I am testing on my Windows Laptop with Server2Go.

Did I got the wrong Download?

Hi Finc... welcome.
This should not be caused by the sNews package you downloaded.
If you uploaded the .htaccess file (not the htaccess.txt file) to your domain root (same location as snews.php and index.php) and the host's Apache server has its mod_rewrite module enabled... your links should work.

I'm assuming "Server2Go" is your service provider/host.
Wrong assumption, I see. I have no experience with "Server2Go" but if it includes and uses Apache Server... do this anyway for the experience of it.

Create a new PHP file and insert the following in it:

Code: [Select]

<?php
// Show all information, defaults to INFO_ALL
//phpinfo();

// Show just the module information.
phpinfo(INFO_MODULES);

?>

There are two options in this script.
The first one, phpinfo(); (currently commented out) will show all PHP information about the host server when enabled.
The second, phpinfo(INFO_MODULES); is enabled and will show just the module information we want to look at.

Save the file in the root of where your sNews installation is. and upload it to your domain root.

Add phpinfo.php to the URL to your site (on your local machine) and you should get your host server's information.
The first panel should be titled apache2handler and the last block in the panel should be Loaded Modules.
Have look in there and see if you can find mod_rewrite.
If not, that is the reason the links don't work.
If it is there, then it's loaded and you have an .htaccess problem.

Some hosts have been known to have a habit of putting their own .htaccess files in the root of their customers' domains... and if the site owner tries to upload their own .htaccess file, the host's file keeps being re-written over the one being uploaded... thereby stopping the uploaded one from being applied. You can find out if this is happening to you by downloading the .htaccess file in your domain root to your computer, the comparing the contents of it to the contents of your .htaccess file and see if they are different.

If you are experiencing problems trying to get your .htccess file to take on your domain, or if the mod_rewite module is not loaded (enabled on their server) then you will need to contact your host's technical assistance and get them to solve it for you.

Again, if "Server2Go" uses Apache Server, you want to open Apache's conf/httpd.conf file and search for mod_rewrite
If the string containing it has a #-sign in front of it, remove the #-sign and save the file.
Shut Apache off, then re-start it again.
Then try the URL to your site again and the links should work.

Thank You Keyrocks for Your intensive reply!

Server2Go locked itself out of my Laptop and I returned to Vertrigo
http://vertrigo.sourceforge.net/

With Vertrigo everything works just fine and I have time to go deeper into sNews.

Best Regards
