Finally Ubuntu user...
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:58:09 pm »

... I am ;)

Ok, sort of, hehe... Didn't dare to go fully Ubuntu, so I'm VMware Player'ing Ubuntu so far. So damn nice... Will try it out and see if I can do what I do in "fuckdows 7" and then swappeliy swap is prolly a fact.

If you haven't tested and you're curious but do not really dare just swapping. Try downloading VMware's player and a Ubuntu dist. Then just "install" the Ubuntu ISO from that player and you have a virtual computor with Ubuntu residing there in all it's glory...

It seems worth it, really.

Welcome to the club, Pat!
I've been a "buntuer" for more than 3 years now, and windoze-free (entirely) since october 2007.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll do my best to help.
Mind you, I'm not an ubuntu  master, not even a power user, just a ... let's say, ubuntu-savvy user.
I've used each and every release since Edgy Eft up until Karmic Koala (with their ups and downs), plus Eeebuntu 3 for my EeePC netbook. So I like to think I know a thing or two about using it for work ...  ;)

I am sort of in the same boat as Nicu.  I've been using Ubuntu since Warty (on and off).  I have it running my server and my laptop now.  Go ahead ask away.

* Note - make sure you know your system specs and see if there will not be issues if and when you do a full installation. Two issues are usually wireless and sound.

Aha, sound is still off, but I haven't had time to see if I can fix it. I'm told it's only to find "Ubuntu drivers" for my specific card and drag it onto the command promt in the VM version and then it "installs" just like that... I'm eager to try, hehe

What sound card/onboard sound do you have? ( and yes knowing your system specifications now is important )

Ahhh, asking me this while I'm at work, hehe... Some Realtek thingy... Have to look at it when I come home. I do not store this information while not in front of puter, hehe. I'll be back.

Like Nuke said, it is important! The simple reason for this being the fact that even though hardware support has increased significantly, there are issues caused by poor linux driver support from the manufacturers on certain makes&models. OK, that's theory ...
Practice says we need to know your specific specs. ;)

LE: Nukpana, sorry for "renaming" you ... I just couldn't help it :)

Sounds like on-board (on the motherboard) sound to me.
Assuming your sound was working before you started using VMWare Player, you likely just need to get the driver working with Ubuntu...
Maybe there is an answer here -  Installing Ubuntu Realtek sound drivers - down towards the bottom of the thread.

Pat, have you tried this?
Are there any ALSA drivers installed?

Frankly, I think the "default sound interface" in VMWare is the culprit, somehow.
Maybe you should just try a dual boot instead of VM-ing.
Or make yourself a live usb stick and boot on it, see if the sound is working in Ubuntu on your real machine, not VM.

Exactly what I' ve been adviced at the Ubuntu forums.. will try dual boot instead of VM... Later Ubuntu straight up with possible use of WINE for those special things...
