cannot Login
« on: December 01, 2007, 06:36:20 am »

Despite numerous attempts, over some time, I am unable to Login to sNews.

I have a Mac G5 running 10.4.11. My ISP is running PHP 5.1.4.

The folder for sNews is 'journal' and the database is called 'gejblog'.

The datebase was set up through webmin and mysql via my ISP account.

The username and password are correct.

// DATABASE VARIABLES
function db($variable) {
   $db = array();
   $db['website'] = 'http://www.grapeexpectations.com.au/journal/';
   $db['dbhost'] = 'localhost'; //MySQL Host
   $db['dbname'] = 'gejblog'; //Database Name
   $db['dbuname'] = '??????'; //Database Username
   $db['dbpass'] = '??????'; //Database password
   $db['prefix'] = ''; //Database prefix
   $db['dberror'] = '<strong>There was an error while connecting to the database.</strong> <br /> Check your database settings.'; //Database error message
   return $db[$variable];

<IfModule mod_php4.c>
    php_value session.use_trans_sid 0
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</IfModule>
RewriteEngine On
#RewriteBase /journal
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^(.*) $1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?category=$1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+) index.php?category=$1&title=$2 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/ index.php?category=$1&title=$2&commentspage=$3 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_-]+)/([0-9]+)/ index.php?category=$1&nbsp;articlespage=$2 [L]

When I click 'Login' I get...

Not Found

The requested URL /journal/login/ was not found on this server.

I have also checked that the

LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so

AddModule mod_php4.c.

are not disabled.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Cheers,
Rob Hicks

remove the "hash mark" from this line: #RewriteBase /journal so it reads : RewriteBase /journal

Thank you for your prompt response. Much appreciated.
I downloaded a fresh sNews 1.6 and altered .htaccess and snews.php...

<IfModule mod_php4.c>
    php_value session.use_trans_sid 0
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</IfModule>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /journal
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^(.*) $1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?category=$1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+) index.php?category=$1&title=$2 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/ index.php?category=$1&title=$2&commentspage=$3 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_-]+)/([0-9]+)/ index.php?category=$1&nbsp;articlespage=$2 [L]

// DATABASE VARIABLES
function db($variable) {
   $db = array();
   $db['website'] = 'http://grapeexpectations.com.au/journal/';
   $db['dbhost'] = 'localhost'; //MySQL Host
   $db['dbname'] = 'gejblog'; //Database Name
   $db['dbuname'] = '?????'; //Database Username
   $db['dbpass'] = '?????'; //Database password
   $db['prefix'] = ''; //Database prefix
   $db['dberror'] = '<strong>There was an error while connecting to the database.</strong> <br /> Check your database settings.'; //Database error message
   return $db[$variable];

Uploaded through FTP to the site.

http://www.grapeexpectations.com.au/journal - brought the login page.

Clicking the Login button returned...

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the sNews community. Iím sorry to hear (read  :)) that things are not working out for you as they should be.
Your problem looks like a .htacces issue.  Do you know we have a extended help section? Read this for example; it may help you.

Rob,
Check that mod_rewrite is enabled on your server. Also make sure that the .htaccess is stored in the same folder as the snews.php and index.php files. The only real stumbling block 'out of the box' for Macs is using the .htaccess file but you seem to have that in hand, so from what I can tell things should Just Workô.

Got the same problem.
Uploaded the files, created the database, when I click Login, it links tot sitename/login, which doesn't exist..

I did remove the hash from: #RewriteBase"

I checked my web host specs, it says on their site, they have .htacces enabled, Apache 2.0.x

What else is there to check?
Thanks!

Hi Wiesje, welcome to sNews.
Start by reading through the Help section and especially the FAQ. I'm pretty sure you'll find the answers to your question there.

I dunno how much help it is for the others, but I got it working after I created a Directory section for /var/www/html/sNews16 with AllowOverride All.

Now I'll see how to change the password...

Had to change something else in .htaccess, not only removing the #, but also changing the path 'RewriteBase /sNews15' to my own path. Found this out after installing locally (usb webserver).
Perhaps something to mention in the install-instruction??

Well, now it seems to work fine, it's just that I can't change the password in the admin section.
It keeps on telling: Error Passwords do not match....
Guess that's a different forum post, so I'll have a look.

Thanks anyway for your responses.  :-*

I am surprised to find out that there's nothing mentioned in readme.html.  ???

Changing password and username: Max length is 8 digits or characters (upper- or lowercase).

I'm also having a can't login problem.

But this time it doesn't seem to have anything to do with httaccess. When I click the login link I go to the exact same page (only on a different directory: /login). But there are no login options, just the same page as in home.

What am I doing wrong?

Using Snews 1.6 Multi-user.

I am having the same login problem. I have the site installed on my local machine. if I go to http://localhost/  the sNews page shows up fine. But when I click on the login link at the bottom I get:
  Object Not Found!
        The requested URL was not found on this server. The link on the referring page seems to be wrong or outdated. Please inform the author of that         page  about the error.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 404
localhost

I noticed that when I click on the login link the address it's trying to contact is http://localhost/login, but there is no folder named login in my root folder? Am I missing a setup  configuration?

Thanks,
Dave

If you are running on "Localhost" (your own computer)... tell us about your set-up.
Are you running a WinXP machine?
What server bundle did you install - XAMPP or something else?
   (If its a WinXP & XAMPP environment, you need to install your sNews file-set in a project folder in the htdocs directory.)
Have you successfully run any other CMS project in your localhost environment yet?

ok, so I uninstalled all the components and re-installed on my local machine. It is all working fine now. I have no idea what caused the login error before. However, now that I have it working I need to deploy the snews CMS in our teams local development environment. It is a linux machine. Running Apache, mysql and php 5. The snews files are installed in /var/www/html. When I open firefox and go to our homepage at http://tmosweb01 the default snews website template shows up just fine. But when I click on "login" at the bottom of the page I'm getting the same error as before. It says object not found and can't find the http://tmosweb01/login link. The directory where the index.php file resides has been chmod with 777. I specified the correct DB with username and password. I also, uncommented the .htaccess file and put in  RewriteBase var/www/html/ .  I can't think of any other configurations or settings I have to do that would make a difference. Any suggestions?
