[PACKAGE] - sNews 1.6 MESU = Modular + Enhanced, and more...
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:33:58 pm »

Release Date: October 08.07
Update Notice: March 05.08
The languages file, folder structure and switching mechanism have been updated.
Instructions for making additional language files are contained in the top of the languages/english/langfile.php file.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to sNews 16 MESU. Much like its bigger cousin - sNews 16 MEMU (multiple users) - this one is a single-user package with the same modularity and enhancements... like multiple templates switchable from the Admin >> Settings panels... plus 2 more extra content positions... and more. Read through all the details in the Read Me File (updated Oct. 19.07). And... when you are ready, you can Download the Package and start playing with it.

There are three templates in the templates folder... the default 1.6 template, the greenway template (by David Herreman) and something called the dropdowns template that I created to test-run a drop-down menu system. It sports a fully-functional horizontal nav-bar that automatically displays the categories as you create them... and lists the articles in drop-downs once you create articles in the categories. This package also contains the Content Re-odering mod based on one originally posted by Celebro for 1.5 (some time ago). You use it to re-order your categories, your articles under categories, and pages as well.  Oh... and it includes the Calendar script Patric circulates with his Charcoal 1.6 template package... as well as a Lightbox image overlay that displays full-sized images from thumbnail images inserted into articles or pages using the Image Links Panel (Mattonik).

NOTE: All known bug-fixes listed in the Patches & Fixes (1.6) Forum... as of today... have also been included in all of the system & engine files.
This will be my last "Package" release for sNews 1.6. It is time to start thinking about and working on the next version - 1.7.  :)

Important Installation Notes:
Mac OS Users: Before getting started... read Installing sNews on a Mac" by Agentsmith, our experienced Mac OS sNews installer.
1.  Make sure you take the time to read through the readme.htm file included in the package.
2.  sNews 16 MESU is not... I repeat... not structured like a default sNews 16 package. There are several files, and folders with more files... and each has a part
     to play in the way this package operates.
3.  Ensure that you install all files and folders in the same way they come. Everything in the un-zipped package folder must go into the root or a sub-root of
     your domain. If it is in a sub-root location, you will need to make changes to the .htaccess file and the snconfig.php (configuration settings) file to reflect
     the sub-root location. You may also need to do this in the cal/config.php file, and the mods/statistics.php file...to ensure these scripts function properly.
4.  Follow the directions carefully when making a new database... and populating it with your new set of tables... and ensure the database settings are right
     in snconfig.php.
5.  If you do not wish to use the calendar script, you can remove the "include" string for it in the bottom part of snconfig.php... remove the PHP function call
     string for it from the index.php file in each template folder (in the templates folder). If you have not use for it at all, you can delete the cal folder as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drop-in Templates for sNews 16 MESU
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These template packs are easy to install and use. Un-zip the contents and copy the folder into the MESU site's templates folder. When logged in, switch to any template by choosing "Settings" from the "Site" panel on the main Admin page, then scroll down and expand the "Templates" panel, choose your template from the drop-down... and save. Click the "Home" page link to refresh the page and view the new template.

1.  Body-scroll - Basic fluid-width template with a fixed header & footer, and scrolling center content area. Simulates an I-frame template using CSS only.

Very nice!

I suppose that means your old enhanced version will be 'discontinued'? :)

In any case this is a better platform, I found it a great help starting out to have the option of using a best practice modded package.

 :o Great job!!

I had an easy job to implement the id to the <body> tag mod http://snewscms.com/forum/index.php?topic=3962.0.

But it's a real hell to do the same thing with http://snewscms.com/forum/index.php?topic=4779.0 Long articles splitted subpages >:(

Any help would come in handy ;D

Thanks Pwendel. The '1st generation' Enhanced package will continue to be available, and I will still maintain my project install for it for a while. I am finding that I like the MESU structure better for adding new mods and addons... keeping them out of the engine file where possible. I also like using bakercad's Template switch system... as it lets me create and test-run any number of templates in one project installation... switching from one to the other as I go along without having to re-configure anything. Another feature of this is that when you have several projects using the same structure... templates can simply be copied from one project to another and are instantly available without changing anything.

VERY GOOD JOB @KEY.

Once again I thank you for taking the time to test-run a new package Riu. Your interest and assistance is of great value.  :)

this maybe a fatigue-induced dumb question, but I can't login to the admin.  I believe the default user / pass is supposed to be

test
test

but try as I might I can't get it in.  (and it's not my math)

edit: I realize that this is probably caused because I didn't upload everythingto my domain root.

Yikes! Is there no other way? It seems like things would get pretty messy, pretty fast if I put all these folders loose into the root folder. What if I create a subdomain - would that work?

edit2: Looks like this is a common problem, with many different causes? Here is some info if it will be helpful:

config:

// DATABASE VARIABLES
function db($variable) {
   $db = array();
   # OFFLINE
   $db['website'] = 'http://outrightcommunications.com/shared/novo/sn/'; // change to your actual URL
   $db['dbhost'] = 'localhost'; //MySQL Host
   $db['dbname'] = 'outright_snews'; // change to your Database Name
   $db['dbuname'] = 'outright_username; //Database Username
   $db['dbpass'] = outright_pass; //Database password
        //Database error message
   $db['dberror'] = '<strong>There was an error while connecting to the database.</strong> <br /> Check your database settings.';
   return $db[$variable];
}

yes, but be sure to Mod the Config section of the snew.php to reflect the correct path to the folder.

To which folder?

See my edited post above.  I believe that the sNews folder root and my specified URL are the same.  So, in theory, this should work properly, yes? That would indicate that something else is causing the problem?

that tellls me the snews is in a folder named 'sn'. Correct?
Here is the hashed value for user 'test' from the sql file:
098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6

check using phpmyadmin that this is the entry in the database for user and pass to correspond to test/test as the login.
have you added the .htaccess to the folder where the sNews is installed and chmodded the image folders, too?

jlhaslip - thanks!

The problem is that I'm a great blundering fool and forgot to import the SQL tables.

Of course, when I went to phpMyAdmin to look for my db pas hash, and couldn't find it, that became obvious.

Thanks for your assistance, and sorry about messing up this thread.  :-[

Did you remove the comment Hash mark from the line in the .htaccess file which sets mod-rewrite on?

I can't recall seeing that in the readme, but I am sure the line needs to be uncommented... I'll post a pm to keyrocks about that.

And you are welcome :P

This applies to any sNews installation. This and all other variations or packages of sNews... as well as the default package itself... all use the same .htaccess file. When installing in a sub-root location, you need to un-comment (remove the #-sign from) the #RewriteBase /sNews16 string and change the sNews16 to the name of the folder you have it located in. This ensures mod_rewrite functions as it would in a root location. I have made a note within the .htaccess file for the MESU package and will include the updated file the next time I add any revisions. ;)

I didn't find  .htaccess in distribution package and used  default one.

Some addition to .htaccess

Some bots will ignore robots.txt files as they don't care if you want them on your web site or not. This should fix it
Code: [Select]
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^EmailSiphon" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^EmailWolf" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^ExtractorPro" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^CherryPicker" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^NICErsPRO" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^Teleport" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^EmailCollector" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^LinkWalker" bad_bot
SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^Zeus" bad_bot

<Limit GET POST>
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
Deny from env=bad_bot
</Limit>

Distribution also didn't have ROBOTS.TXT

NOTE: I just checked the ZIP package and... yes... the .htaccess file is in the ZIP package.
sNews (default) does not include a robots.txt file. I haven't yet needed on on other sNews (online) sites so I haven't seen the need for one... yet.  :P

Key's, as noted in a bunch of other threads, if you want to be nice to the 3-4 Mac users you'll get, include a copy of .htaccess as a .txt file (htaccess.txt). Mac users (on OS X at least) won't see the .htaccess unless they turn on "view invisible files" in their good text editor (not all editors have that feature) and/or FTP client. Editing an invisible file can be a hassle...
