Newbie question static Homepage examples?
« on: May 28, 2007, 02:13:36 pm »

Hi,

I'm trying to use sNews to replace the current static website belonging to one of my clients. You can see his current website here (French) : http://www.mecenaction.com

Basically, he has asked me to reproduce the same site, featuring mostly static, unchanging content, but he would like some dynamic content on an internal, "news" page, or alternatively within a small block on the homepage. He specifically wants a predominantly"static" homepage - meaning a brochure-style, laid-out homepage with fixed content. He specifically doesn't want a blog-style homepage with content stacked by date.

I thought sNews would be ideal for him, because it is simple, lightweight, and easy to manage. I'd like to show him some examples of sNews sites that are close in spirit to his site. However, all the sNews sites I have seen up till now seem to have blog-style homepages, blurring the boundary between a CMS and a blog, which is fine - but it's going to make it a little difficult for me to convince him to use sNews if he thinks it's yet another blog program.

So, to sum up :

- can you point me at some sites using sNews where the blog-style pages are NOT on the Home, and where the Home is a more traditional brochure-type page? Prefereably using a nice CSS template :-)

- similarly, are there any sites out there with the blog-style content within a block (or a column) on the aforementioned homepage?

Thanks in advance!

Well, first of a welcome to you ric... And secondly, mhm... tricky one, hehe... almost everyone uses the sNews as a blog of some sort...

Lemme see...

Well, I'm currently using my frontpage as static, although I will stop with that, hehe... Do not like that one bit, but nev the less, it's static, and all occurances of articles is in the pages above... http://p-ahlqvist.com

More...mhm... Marek's site is quite static aswell, dunno if that's indended but it is: http://www.design4.ltd.pl/
Dougie's page is static aswell: http://www.snews.ca/ with a newsy thing on the left...

Thing is with snews you can make a static page (add new page) and choose that to be frontpage, so alla other posting made appears in other categories and onother pages, and the one you chose for frontpage becomes untouched...

Hope this did something for ya ;)

@ riczito... Welcome to the growing world of sNews.
Patric summed it up pretty good. There are ways of mixing static page files with dynamically-generated page content within the same, single template file... which is mainly what sNews is all about... eliminating the need to generate a new page-file of duplicate code for every page.

I noticed your client's site's pages are .aspx-based... so the web's files are likely on a Windows IIS server. The sNews CMS needs to run on a Linux-powered Apache/MySQL server... with Apache's mod_rewrite module enabled... first and foremost... so check with the client's host to see if that domain can be switched to an account with these services available. :)

Hi Ric, welcome to the wonderful and whacky ;) world of sNews.
Here's one sNews-driven site that is basically a brochure site with almost only static pages, except for the News section. It's not built exactly like you describe, but it can be done without too much trouble.
http://thehomestagingsource.com/

However, as keyrocks points out, you'd have to give aspx (and possibly the current host) the finger and instead use php.

First of all, thanks to everybody that replied, and I'm sorry if I took time to get back to you here - I didn't get notified by mail of any new posts, strangely enough, or rather if I did, they were filtered as spam... :-( Nonetheless, I'm very impressed by this community!

Anyhow, I finally found the "set page as homepage" checkbox in the admin, so I'll be using that! Thank you Patric and Keyrocks for pointing that out to me! Thank you also for the site examples you pointed me at. Very interesting. As for the ASPX thing, it isn't a problem : the site will be moving onto a PHP/mySQL server. I avoid ASP and MS IIS like the plague! :-)

My next steps are a little daunting, but I'm slowly getting there :

- finish setting up sNews as I want : I am using sNewsML as a base, and I've translated it to French (will upload here soon!). That's working great! I now would really like to get a WYSIWYG editor working properly. I have tried using the TinyMCE-enabled sNews I found on this forum, but it only half works. I can't get the "simplebrowser" (browse local server) function to work at all, and that is indispensable, as my client is really not very savvy, and won't be able to manually add a URL to an image... Has anyone managed to get tinyMCE or FCKEditor, or even HTMLArea working 100%, with a working server browser?

- next : design a nice template (that's the easy and fun part!).

- integrate the various sNews tags into the CSS so the content is injected properly. I'm a little worried about this aspect, and I'm even thinking about hiring Patric or someone if I can't get it right myself. So be prepared :-)

If this experience with sNews works well, I'll probably replace my current (static) website with it. I'd just like to add that I have tried at least a dozen CMSes, and only two of them remain : sNews, and CMSMadeSimple, which is also very nice, but much more complex, and a little overkill for my needs. Also, the whole community aspect of it is a sprawling mess, like so many CMSes - you need to spend literally hours on the forums just to get a snippet of info...

Anyhow, thanks again to all of you!

nope, it's Flash ... :P
jesting aside, thanks guys, I'll pass on the kudos to James( my associate/partner in crime) who did the design. All* I did was integrate it with sNews.

The gallery is from istockphoto.com, in case you're interested; they have several very good Flash galleries there.
