Will this be a totally new install, with a lot of new database insertions. Or will it be easily changed from 1.4 to 1.5 ?

With the URL in the comments etc, will this have the "nofollow" tag on it?  Also, is the commenters IP recorded somewhere?  I'd like to be able to find people spamming and ban IPs etc ;)

Mhm, that spamming IP ban has been disussed somewhere here before, and someone commented on that like:
"IP banning has no real function as pro spammers don't use same IP each time. " And if people like me get different IP each time connected to internet, this fails... But it's bound to restrict it some anyways...

well, you can get a new IP yes, but they are always from the same range of IPs.  Yes real pro spammers will use proxies and bot nets and stuff though if they are really dedicated - not much you can do really.

I just want to be able to identify who the people are who are posting meaningless comments like "sdfjyhsdufys" (that is copy paste example for you) and other counter-productive things really.  You are unlikely to find a simple silver-bullet to stop dedicated professional spam, but you can at least stop morons by finding their IP and blocking it with .htaccess!

sorry mattd, there is no solution for "sdfjyhsdufys" comments except spending a lot of time cleaning them manually. installing dictionary to avoid this...mhmm... doesn't seem like a really good and productive idea. yes, there are some "little" tricks but with setbacks as they are mostly language dependant: profanities stopper, word length counter etc... example: my native language doesn't have words with pairs of letters such as df or hs or gh near each other (random querty typing ;)) - such a filter is rather hard to create and it doesn't come cheap. does it worth it? and don't forget - you'll never get 100% result from it.

IP block, as you said, can cover a wide range of addresses - and maybe the real and willing users/customers with dynamic IPs.

there's still a bright side - most of the automated spammers do not behave like "browser users" - they rather parse poorly written code and move through protocols without clicking buttons. one should use that approach to (or at least try to) win this battle..

oh yes, morons... they'll eventually rule the world. if you gave up :D

(hint: deny them access to forms, not the rest of the site)

Yes there are pro blems with automatically detecting that sort of thing, and you have to review the comments to remove the racist and illegal things anyway.  This is why I want is a listing of their IP so I can see who it is, and if they are a repeat offender then ban them.

Using htaccess you can ban ranges of IPs one byte at a time, so you are only going to be banning smallish numbers at the most.  I'd only use that if people were presistently causing problems etc

If you want to eliminate such meaningless posts... a possible solution would be approving each and every comment manually.

Drawback of this, of course is in case you get a lot of comments every day, it might take a lot of your time to go through all the posts.

Another drawback is that, depending on frequency of your checking for new comments, comments on your site won't always be current...

But here's an idea how frequent posters could be excluded from this...
If someone is a frequent poster on your site, you simply place her e-mail in the whitelist and her comments don't have to be approved in order to show on your website.

P.S. I apologize if this has already been discussed somewhere on this forum before...

But there's no limitation at the moment, he can be as slow as he wants...

maybe something else stupid he did..

but another thing that would be nice is that you can splitt up the article and the pic connected and put them in a more newspaperlook.. like when a picture is imp. in the article... now the pic is just placed on the top...

Maybe also a way so that the "left"- and "right"- function takes over the news from the centerfunction after a number of news just like the pastfunction is doing..

Have you tougth about puting the Headline under the picture..?

OK, I'm near the final stage and there's no bugs at the moment that I know of. Give me just a bit more time and I'll send you a PM to test it...
