Anyone? Recomend a good/free newsletter php script...
« on: October 05, 2006, 08:30:01 am »

...that I can install over the top of sNews?

Im not going to intergrate yet.  I will run the thing manually until I know enough about php to integrate it into sNews

Looking for something that will:
- have its own admin
- allow for auto subscribe and unsubscribe
- email confirm
- handle bounce and delete emails automatically

Any recommendations from anyone at all - is anyone using one at the moment alongside of sNews?  I would love to know?

Thanks!

Hey, Rich... why you would want this when users can simply subscribe to your RSS feed to get the same result?

But as I can't debate with what you want  I found this:

Paid for:
http://www.pilotgroup.net/product/overview.php?BID=25&ID=346&referer1=HotScripts&referer2=Newsletter
http://www.comdevweb.com/linksdir.php?adref=7415

Free of charge:
http://www.listmessenger.com/?hotscripts-light
http://thexl.4000webs.com/XLmail.php
http://www.free-php.org.uk/free2.php
http://www.web-mailing-list.com/

I haven't really looked for the features you mentioned, but just searched for newsletter on: http://hotscripts.com/search/12254795.html

Well, it has been mentioned on the forum somewhere in the past that a lot of people dont even know what RSS is, other than a funny little button at the bottom of a webpage?!  Let alone how to then harvest and read in said RSS Feed?  :)

I mean, those of us, such as yourself, who arent technologically chellenged and havent succumed to WinDOSE MicroSPONGE's idea that everything should be Opaque and not Transparent - dont need to know how its working, just that it does...   ...well, RSS isnt a problem at all really.

Here is a great article, though a little old?  http://www.llrx.com/features/rss.htm

People are just so used to signing up to newsletters, who am I to argue.

And in fact, I wish everyone WAS RSS SAVVY!  Mate my job a hell of a lot easier trying to keep up with the customers on my website!

Thanks, I have seen some on the list that you have posted and Ill check out the others - have you used some of these ones Patric?

Nope, I have not. I usally not work with such big companies that need newsletters, so... The closest I came to this was a dentists 6 different "shops" in which he needed to message employees in some way. The solution was, hehe... a webserver running locally and for the IT tech guy to add active desktop to each clients computor, and then setting them to get this: http://p-ahlqvist.com/elmborgs/desktop.php and then adjusting the "site" to appear on the left or right hand of the clients desktops, and viola, a sNews Intranet message system

But newsletter, no...

I found this one, and it's Aussie too, like me!

http://www.zookoda.com/index.cfm?apg=home

I was actually thinking of something along the lines of this, and I know what people are going to say; "...thats double handling Richard, why the hell would you want to do that??", and I say to them, well, I dont know...

http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2005/09/16/rss2email-in-less-than-50-lines-of-php/

...maybe, I spose, when it comes down to it, it means you have full control, no added ads or extra crap, you get to keep the emails address (would have to impliment SQL or FlatFile?!) and at a later date, could be tweaked to add a "membership" function into the whole show?

Maybe Im talking out my butt, Im not really a php programmer yet, Im still learning.

But it would allow you to have a "Subscribe" bar, people drop an email in and Submit and its in their email inbox, or of they use an aggregator they can use that (though most people dont even know what an Agg is?!).  From the point of view of someone coming to your site - best of both worlds!

It also means that the RSS feed is already there, already updated every time a new post is there and this would just pick it up and send it on.

Maybe Im not making sense, but I am going to try and understand how this damb script works, cos it looks like what Im after, and see what I can come up with.

Thanks everyone for the links - Ill keep searching too...

Newsletter are still a great source of communication and marketing,... eCommerce relies heavily on newsletters where an RSS feed cannot sufice.

Oh, I fully realise that one - thats why Im looking for something.

I love sNews, and I mean I have been through Mambo, Drupal, Joomla that all have newsletter built in...   ...wouldnt touch them with a pole after spending years designing sites with them:  Way too bulky, slow, had to template, community support does not speak "english" (just Geek!) and it got a lot much, especially for someone like me who already has a full time biz.

I mean, Im a professional magician - Im looking for something that someone can sign up to, get posts in their email box whenever I post a new page or article (just a link back to the page, not the whole article in the email) so that I can keep in contact with my customers and offer them deals/discounts/updates.

Later down the track, maybe allow for people signed up to the newsletter to become a member and have a "members area"...?

But trying to find something that will do the job and not be as bulky as most of these other CMS's is a pain.

I mean, I have some ideas as to how to impliment them, but my php knowledge isnt good enough yet to hook into sNew's mail sending, or working out a way to tag articles as new and send them in an email...   ...or even how to switch the login to a database link instead of the sNews.php file, and then to accept registration as well (though the other day, I came pretty close!).

At the moment, Im finding code and giving it a go and learning that way, but its slow.

Sure, my upcoming website for the biz (hopefully live in 2007) will be fantastic and be running sNews - but the extras will make life much easier!

Ill keep looking.

Was thinking of offering this aswell, according to your thoughts... All visitors of some sites do not get the RSS bit, so it's not a bad idea to offer this aswell...

And all on this here site, seemed all good and well, 'til one tested to do a test mail... It wont work, atleast I can't make it work, and the support, or whatever one would call it is... not.... present. Things about having to be approved, validate "sender details" and crap which is supplied when registering... Ahhhhh, services like this, that on one hand don't work, on the other don't offer support, on the third... gets a broom stick, with the brushy end dipped in gearboxoil and lit on fire, up your arse...

Damn them, that was a good one hour down the drain, hehe...
