Spam on comments
« on: October 31, 2005, 09:24:20 am »

Well, just a thing that I would like your opinion on...

I don't recieve spam on Solucija's comments at all. Call me lucky, but that's the way it is.

I saw some interesting ways of dealing with spam on coments, here's one of them > http://snews.awddesign.co.uk/snews/index.php?id=1

Are spambots checking does checkboxes?

Fighting spam with authorization images is really simple, but the fact that we want sNews to retain it's simplicity and single-fileiness  ;D makes us wonder what approach to take.

I want to hear your opinion on that..

My immediate reaction is... Yes, SPAM should be fought with what means available. but as you, I have not had any spam in my comments either, so I really don't know.

I guess it will show up eventually, as the sNews gets more spread, so atleast preparing for spamprevention isn't a bad idea...Maybe an includable function to download for those who are interested (if even possible),...

I say this without any knowledge of PHP whatsoever ;)...Just a thought. - Patric.

hm... it is tricky. and perhaps dull to talk about it until spam eventually arrives to sNews, because we actually don't know how it will be different from normal posts. when we determine differences between spam and "normal" comment post it will be easy to implement spam detection.

We can't separate one from another. The only thing I notice is excessive use of the letter "x"  ;D

Other systems use pictures for authorization...

I put forward the suggestion of "captchas" along the lines of blogkomm.com and what Holger is doing there Luka.

I think that Albert tried this and managed to get it to work ok, but was worried by the fact that the added code didn't validate to Strict, so suggested not to use this at this time.

Perhaps we could work on making that code valid, and see where we can take it either as an included function the the snews script, or have the option to turn it on or off as required for those that choose to use the supplied comments system.

Or maybe even almalgamate the best features of both to get what we want. I see this as eventually necessary as snews grows and becomes more widely used.

As stated before, basically anything we can do to prevent to bots from playing with our sites has got to be good no?

What do you think?

Hi Luka

Like you, I have not had any S yet (did not want to use the word as it may be bad luck :)

but as you can see i am trying out a new way of doing it. as I feel  "captchas" with images is not
web accesable. And to me this is very important to be web accesable and to follow the WC3 standads.

All designers and develpers should alway have that in the back of there minds. I do as Its taken me 6 months to even
get my main site updated. 2 pages only done so fare .

Just me Albert :)
