Title: Main site fixes, suggestions
Post by: centered on August 21, 2007, 01:51:29 pm
Maybe I am nit picking little things over the main site... but maybe Luka would want to check things over for consistancy

1.  Shouldn't the top right div come down a bit to align with the left heading border (front page) /breadcrumb border (other pages)?
2.  Sections div should have a width of 90% to be consistant with the body, the border goes all across the screen.
3.  Section border should be replaced with the swiggle line before the footer, again for consistancy.
4.  References to 1.5 should be 1.6/1.5 for consistancy with the main downloads: http://snewscms.com/help/installing-snews/
5.  LAMP and MAMP should be mentioned in snews-on-your-computer.  At least a extrenal link to help get set up on relevant machines. (LAMP can be listed saying please visit your distro's help or forum pages for more info to install).  LAMP and MAMP are specialized for their respected OS.  Also WAMP is mentioned in the Glossary, sems to make sense to mention it here too.
6.  In addition to 5: In the glossary

XAMPP
Another Apache, MySql, PHP server bundle for use on a Windows machine.

Should be Windows, Linux and Mac for consistancy to the snews on your computer page.
7. Possible links in FAQ to the Getting started (to make sure everything is set up correctly), Template tags, Glossary
8.  FAQ:
    1. Mod rewrite references Linux server, if referencing Xampp, that should be mentioned
    2. 1.5 should changed to 1.6 to show the newest version
    3.  No RSS-logo in the address bar - maybe have a link to an rss logo or http://www.feedicons.com/

Just for cosmetics:
A little question: why the sNews petals aren't used for the favicon?

Also the contrast between new posts and no new posts needs a little adjusting. The only difference is a small little check mark, very hard to see.

Tarm, that shoudl be for the forum thread not this one, but good point.  Also to add to your point, the New posts should stand out more.

Sven, good question...

Oh one more thing, where is my picture under the sNews dudes?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
(just kidding!!!!)

If any of my above points are not valid just let me know.  I may have oversighted or overstepped myself somewhere.

All good points. I am sure we'll get these little things touched up within the next week or so... we all want to at least get used to the new environment for a spell though... me for one. Nice pix Centered.

Thanks for your points, there's room for improvements and I'm about to make them. The site in IE also doesn't look very nice.

Thanks for the favicon also, I've uploaded it but it doesn't show for some reason.

Luka, you may want to check the markup too, the front page doesn't validate:

<html xmlns=".w3.org/1999/xhtml">
Should be
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<div id="right"> should be <div class="right">

and the p style in the footer should be in the style sheet or in a style int he header

I have the whole markup here if you want:

Well done centered for providing these fixes  ;D
Loving the favicon too Bob, terririfc!

I'll look at updating the Installing sNews section tonight when I get home from work - that wont take long.  I'll also have a peek at some of the other sections and see what needs tidying up.

I think I've now covered these... Might be improved, but at least they are present ;)

I know we talked about rewriting the piece that Jason mentions in 5). While LAMP and MAMP are defined in the Glossary, the article itself doesn't mention them. Also, the link to the installation guide is not optimal for Mac/Linux users, even if key's Guide is very clear and well written. I could add a passage aimed at Mac users, but it might be better down the line to rewrite the help/snews-on-your-computer/ article, to widen the perspective. Something to think about anyway.

@ pixelated - No Problem, I love the new site and how informative it is, might as well try and help anyway I can to help improve it!

@Phil - Thanks, I saw the changes

@Agent - Thanks for that too, it should at least be a short snippet on how a MAMP and LAMP installation guide could be forthcoming.  Again a simple link could suffice like:

This isn't about the Main site, but I think it will be better to disable HTML posting abillity for members that have less then 300 posts.. or 250 whatever
http://snewscms.com/forum/index.php?topic=5671.0 < example, look at the first post.

and also what about placing the quick reply box at the bottom of the thread?  ::)

and the last  one,

each I post something, the forum  drives me out to the topics list and I have to click the topic again to visit it and view what have I posted.

You can actually adjust both of these things in your Profile
1.  Go to Profile > Look and Layout preferences
2.  Check the 'Return to topics after posting by default' box
3.  Next to 'Use quick reply on topic display:' select from the dropdown menu 'show, on by default'.

I have both of these options enabled, very handy :)

Hi guys!
Nose in my coffee mug, I was looking at the sNews logo this morning..
I know it's none of my business but, just a suggestion:
What about having a slogan under it as a baseline?
I said already I really dig "Experience the lightweight elegance!" (makes me think of Jimi Hendrix's Are you experienced?).
Hum?

Well, migrating to the new forum has altered (some) code. The RSS fix looks likes it is altered also, but I could be mistaken. Saving the post (without modifying) should fix it.

I don't think so. It appears we'll just have to find the "new" link locations as we go through our old topics... one by one... and patch them up. Having limited access (for the regular contributors) to the old Forums for a short while... to use as a reference... would be helpful though.

Ok, it just sometimes breaks reading because of some reference to yet another thread  :-\

P.S. As for going through own posts ... it's not an option, Keyrocks, as there is no such a thing as yet another piece of spare time out of the blue to waste on once done things.

1)  I agree.

@ Sven - Not knowing this. Luka is the man to ask. But perhaps due to the thought of layout of the page... It's sort of a step by step instruction, and it's mear logic would make the site not needed to search, as things one would search for is quite logic to find... And by doing this, one just might learn something along the way... But that's pure speculations ;)

I can answer this one since I typed that sentence. SEO = Search Engine Optimization. "SE optimized" = Search Engine optimized. If written "SEO optimized", you're in effect saying "this makes an sNews driven site highly search engine optimization optimized from the get-go." So it would be correct as is, I think? (When spelling of optimized is corrected naturally.)

By the way, missspelled is misspelled. :D

Optimised is correct English.  Optimized is bastardised American English ;)  ;D
