Title: sNews Problem for future
Post by: Rui Mendes on May 10, 2007, 07:09:00 pm
Hello.

I think there is a future problem for Snews !
Quote
"sNews is a single file, template independant and standards valid Content Management System which allows you to easily manage your web content."
I have a sNews 1.5.31+Multiple Users+Gallery Photos (MUGAL 1.2) and size is around 130Kb + FileSize(language), because I split language.
I'm develop next version ML(Multiple language) and size is 140 Kb maybe more.

I ask you what you think about it? Maybe is better split more than one file.

My Ideia is split Language, Mods, addons, like this
Quote
snews.php
index.php
.htaccess
style.css
mods
langs
addons
gallery
images
I think is better discuss this ideia before snews new version out.

I want ideias from moderators, hero member, anybody

Yes... as Bakercad says... your idea isn't a bad one so keep thinking and sharing on this one. Our current goal is to see the next version released and stable. The Dudes will continue to consider all possible angles as we approach the next version cycle.

@ruimendes
sNews is a core from which anyone can build their own around.

eg, I don't need multi language, or multi user functionality, so a cms without them is ideal for me.
sNews is also a learning tool. Everyone who drops in here, has to get their hands dirty in order to alter their version, so start to pick up what does what in the back end, and also get an introduction to php.

So, since snews arrives in one neat package, we can make changes that we need, including splitting things as you suggest.
However, in doing so, the basic engine has been the corner stone of our changes -- the start point that allows us to choose which direction to travel with it.

That said, as keys and bakercad have said, Luka, Mika and their band of merry offsiders (us Dudes), will listen eagerly to fresh ideas, even try them out, but  as to whether they are implemented as core is another matter ;)

And, please do not forget the end user. For many of them, more features means more confusion. The one file approach, forces (mod)-developers, to go easy on adding  new hot features. I would not want to see sNews turning into a geek-tool. Improving basic functionalities to almost perfect, is good enough for me. ;)

There is a fair bit of discussion about this very topic here (http://www.solucija.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4216)

We (the Dudes) have been leaning to a version release cycle of 6 months. This means each new version will come out approximately 6 months after the previous version release. And, once a version is released, planning for the next one will commence almost immediately. Of course, this all depends on how many Dudes continue to stay active through each of the development & testing cycles.

The soon_to_be_released version that will follow 1.5.31 will have the same general functionality of its predecessor. The changes being made in this next version are what we could call 'functional tune-ups'... keeping the same functions but tweaking several of them to function better than before.

So... if you were going to re-structure sNews into several files and folders... you could go ahead and do that with 1.5.31 to get your structure the way you want it and ensure that it still all functions OK. Then, you could do the same with the next version fairly easily following the same structure fairly quickly.
But... (re-phrased...) the next release will be coming out soon (in less than 7 days). :)

oh my God; Thanks for your news. keyrocks you and the other dudes are in our heart. you work for a better world and one of my wishes is to be like you.
in this week we get the new release ... and in next 6 months later we get new release.
I have some requests:

1)specify which functions changed.
2)backward compatibility like what you say about this new release.

I have a bad experience when 1.5.31 released after 1.5.30 and I don't like this story repeated.

Thanks again dudes :)

Phew!! I would have never seen it had you not pointed it out, I never visit the front page. Do that mean the new site will also be announced or is that something further down the road?
