Editing the position of the article from center to left or right changes the status of the article to: unpublished. Anyone else tried this yet?

1) Editing in general causes this, I think. EDIT: it sets a future date so it seems... when I try to change it into a past date it does nothing.
2) My menu items won't display when I'm not logged in, or is there simply nothing to show?
3) The RSS takes data from the whole database, instead of the snews tables (with prefixes) or is this normal?
4) Try this: add an article to Home and pick 'right'. It disappears... not only does it not show up on the page (simply because there is no 'right' section) but it's also gone from the RSS, so probably also from the database?
5) Where is the Archive section?

Perhaps for later:
4) Comment form: your name can't be 2 characters (like mine: JM)?
5) Logout error takes you straight back to login form, perhaps a little error message?

Thanks Luka, good work. And thanks everyone else for their help.

sNews work fine both of normal url and SEF url. I use Apache Web Server Version 1.3.34 on my Windows XP.
I use AppServ Version 2.4.5 for Windows bundle with Apache and MySQL. It's wonderfull freeware web server, that mod_rewrite (.htaccess) work well on my computer, previuosly all of my free webserver software did not work at all.
This free software can be download at : http://www.appservnetwork.com/
Thanks! ;D 8)

Hi JM

ref v1.4

Quote
Perhaps for later:
4) Comment form: your name can't be 2 characters (like mine: JM)?

Look for // COMMENTS in the code and find this about 10 lines down.

Code: [Select]
if ($commentspage == 0) { $commentspage = 1; }
if (isset($_POST['comment']) AND strlen($_POST['name']) > 2 AND strlen($_POST['comment']) > 5) {

so you would change the  > 2 to >1 to add JM (name)

comment > 5 caracters and more

OK guys, this is my first time posting here, so "Hello" from New Jersey, US.

I've installed the sNews 1.4 beta on both my localhost server and my web server:
Link:  http://www.t0mg.com/sNewsTest/

I seem to get the same error on both when I try to log in - it is looking for a directory that doesn't exist (the "login" directory).  Have I configured something wrong, or are others having this problem?  Let me know - it's late over here, time to get to bed.

sNews 1.4... time to celebrate!

Just a question...
how will 1.3 users upgrade to 1.4? o_O
Since I don't think there is a way without SEFURLS should there be a "converter" that would try to get the title, strip out special characters, replace spaces with underscores and the update the SQL? :///

Or is there a very simple way I don't see? :///

Classic bug on posting articles when tables are prefixed:
search for:
Code: [Select]
$query = "INSERT INTO ". s('prefix'). " articles(title,seftitle,text,textlimit,date,category,position,displaytitle,displayinfo,commentable,image,published) VALUES('". $title ."', '". $seftitle ."', '". $text ."', '". $text_limit ."', '". $date ."', '". $category ."', '". $position ."', '". $display_title ."', '". $display_info ."', '". $commentable ."', '". $image ."', '". $fpublished ."')";it's around line 1314...
and replace with:
Code: [Select]
$query = "INSERT INTO ". s('prefix'). "articles(title,seftitle,text,textlimit,date,category,position,displaytitle,displayinfo,commentable,image,published) VALUES('". $title ."', '". $seftitle ."', '". $text ."', '". $text_limit ."', '". $date ."', '". $category ."', '". $position ."', '". $display_title ."', '". $display_info ."', '". $commentable ."', '". $image ."', '". $fpublished ."')";

So it does ;).

I was wondering one thign though... I have the same tables as in patric_8 going here, but I see no menu items... I have not tampered with anything at all, but the postingbug. The menu items however, such as home- archive- contact are not to be found...

EDIT--> oh, and possibly a small thing...When logging in one is taken to a: "You are Logged In Logout" message... not to "home" where one could start editing articles. One have to click the home link first... As I said, not a but thing, but still ;)
EDIT 2 --> Never mind, I took this outta the older test version:
Code: [Select]
echo "
  • " .l('home'). "
  • ";
    echo "
  • " .l('archives'). "
  • ";

    And inserted in the blank space here:
    Code: [Select]
    echo "

    it does work but lets say you input 1000 lines of text and for get to add the SEF.

    Then you get an error, You go back and all that 1000 lines of text is now gone.
    You will have to do it all again. [will you be happy!!!!]

    OK, there is a solucija (Croatian for solution) to deal with that.

    I tried to create an article without sef title and it displayed an error which is fine because it needs to create valid links.
    When I hit the back button it (FF) forgets the text I wrote.

    What can we do about that?

    All the parameters whithin form were obviously sent. Title, text and positioning. Now if an error occured because of blank fileds we display the new article again but this time with your text in it and a warrning on the top.

    Some want archives and contact showed under categories, some prefer it under menu items.

    1) make another variable $s to decide where will they show up.
    2) manually add them to your template.
    3) Finish the add link feature I'm working on.

    Well, 20 heads are always smarter than one...
    A lot of users on this forum are somehow related with business on Internet and use sNews with their projects. That's why they love to help with development cause in the end it will help them build better sites.

    Take me for example. I build web sites all day and I also need a solid PHP backend to run the CSS template.

    3. Luka sorry for bringing this up again but snews needs a bug tracker... ://

    4. I think it's time for a script that would convert the mysql tables from 1.3 to 1.4 and also insert some kind of typical SEF urls on the archived articles...

    I already explained that all the parameters are passed and I can
    just throw in a warning when the page reloads and realize that
    you forgot the sef title.

    Edit: I know you talked about SEF proposal only through JS,
    but sNews currently doesn't contain JS and if it should, we should start
    with integrating a wysiwyg editor.

    Yes, I see that you have a JS solution for that, but it's really complicated. How are you planning to convert all characters that are used in let's say Sweedish and Polish?

    Croatian has these letters: žšđčć which should be converted to zsdc and it's kinda hard to know that for all languages.

    Those SEF titles could be automatically entered on a temporary basis with a warning.

    Ok..here goes a numbnuts thoughts :)... Concerning SEF titles...

    First one or two q's...Uno. do these SEF need to contain an actual word? Do the SEF need to actually contain a word from the actual title (the one above)? If yes to these q's, you can stop read here, whohaaaaa ;).

    If no to the above q's...and here goes, would it be possible to, by the script, add a number starting with 1 to the SEF title field and doing this in a ascending manner per posted article ?

    Well, I don't claim to be a genius, so don't go throwing things at me now...Just had a small brainstorm and that popped outta my non-php-thinking head...

    Well, Search Engine Friendly links are often called User Friendly links.

    Why?

    When I browse thorugh Solucija and go to www.solucija.com/home/patric-is-a-love-machine/,
    I read about Patric and his love skills.

    Later, I call all of my friends and talk about some Patric and decide to show them what a lover boy he is. I turn my Firefox on and by instinct click on the address bar and just scroll down to www.solucija.com/home/patric-is-a-love-machine/ instantly knowing that this is the page I'm looking for. It's much nicer then solucija.com/324234908.html.

    * All characters used to make a point are fictional
    * No love making was involved during this explanation

    I need to know what to call the addons folder ?

    Hi Luka

    I need to know what to call the mod folder ?

    have mods to add

    Albert

    Aren't mods like snippets and go directly into the snews.php code?
    And addons are like plugins?  ;D

    Call it addons. Although it would be nice if there's always a variable that makes that optional.

    You could make a s('mod_dir') and that way preserve it's path.

    User makes an article and under content writes [include]addons/addon.php[/include]
    and the addon appears...

    OK I've got a serious problem here. Since the .htaccess effects my whole site, it also effects the add on domains.
    My dad's domainname www.vandewydeblik.net re-directs to www.iseeyou-designs.com/suffolks/
    but when I upload the .htaccess file that's required for sNews, and I try to access www.vandewydeblik.net the browser can not display my dad's site.

    Anyone who's got a solution for this?

    PS: I currently dont have sNews on www.iseeyou-designs.com but I just experimented with 1.4BETA so the .htaccess was still there and that caused the problem. I have now removed the .htaccess file.

    THIS IS NOT FINAL and might break some parts of your snews...
    Code: [Select]

    php_value session.use_trans_sid 0

    RewriteEngine On

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

    RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ index.php?category=$1 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+)/ index.php?category=$1&title=$2 [L,QSA]

    RewriteRule ^new/$ index.php?category=new [L]
    RewriteRule ^unpublished/$ index.php?category=unpublished [L]

    what it does is check if it's a real directory/or a category...

    Post by: Jochum Meester on January 31, 2006, 04:18:46 pm
    Well it partly worked. I didn't upload sNews but I did upload the .htaccess file to www.iseeyou-designs.com/
    After I uploaded it, www.vandewydeblik.net (which is www.iseeyou-designs.com/suffolks/) can be displayed, but the images (in the folder www.vandewydeblik.net/images/ = www.iseeyou-designs.com/suffolks/images/) do not show up. I've removed the .htaccess file again so my dad's visitors can see the images (photos) again. I think if I rename the folder images it could work, but if there's another (.htaccess) solution possible I'd like to hear that first.

    EDIT: I was just thinking; Luka how have you done this with the forum? Because the forum is a subdirectory of Solucija.com, and on Solucija.com you've got 1.4BETA with the .htaccess file.

    I did nothing fancy. Forum is in solucija.com/forum/ and I have a subdomain forum.solucija.com that redirects to that directory. sNews engine with htaccess is in my root and everything works great, I've never had any problems with it either locally or on 5-6 websites of my own.

    Hi

    this may be a server config problem as you have 2 web sites and if you add a (.htaccess) file it blows out
    your site.

    Now so directory where you have your sites needs to be looked at and the  (.htaccess) ajusted so that the

    base path of the  (.htaccess) points to the correct web site that it is for.

    1. only works after 4.3 or something
    2. we won't be able to insert images, links etc...

    Hi

    SQL injection will only Apply to  Comments only. As this is the only way that this can be done wth sNews.
    Unless it can be injected via the Search Form or Contact us.

    Adding artcals is done by admin so he won't do it :)

    So this is it...

    I did see if I could add some injections in my 1.4b and all ok. Need more testers for this plus a list of know  injected code

    @ Luka

    You know that rss thingy you commented ?

    Would this do:

    In the global settings:
    Code: [Select]
    $s['RSS_description'] = "The yourURL.com news feed"; // RSS: Brief description for RSS feed
    $s['RSS_language'] = "en-us"; // RSS: Language of RSS Feed
    $s['RSS_char_encoding'] = "ISO-8859-15"; // RSS Character encoding for feed (default ISO-8859-15)
    $s['RSS_ttl'] = "480"; // RSS: Time-To-Live (recommended refresh interval for readers, minutes)
    $s['RSS_date_format'] = "r"; // Date and time format for RSS (PHP syntax, eg. "Y-m-d H:i:s")
    $s['RSS_no_of_items'] = "10"; // Number of articles in RSS feed

    And replacement in the snews.php:
    Code: [Select]
    // RSS FEED
    function rss()
    {
       $db = mysql_connect(s('dbhost'),s('dbuname'),s('dbpass'));
       mysql_select_db(s('dbname')) or die(s('dberror'));
       // get ten articles from center position sorted by date
       $query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "articles WHERE position = 1 ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT 0 , " . s(RSS_no_of_items);
       $result = mysql_query($query);
       $filename = "rss.xml";

       $header = "n";
       $header .= "";
       $header .= "";
       $header .= "" . s(website_title) . "";
       $header .= "" . s(website) . "";
       $header .= "" . s(RSS_description) . "";
       $header .= "" . s(RSS_language) . "";
       $header .= "" . s(RSS_ttl) . "";

       $footer = "
    ";
       $footer .= "
    ";

       $items  = "";
       while ($r = mysql_fetch_assoc($result))
       {
          $patterns[0] = "/&/";
          $patterns[1] = "/      $patterns[2] = "/>/";

          $replacements[0] = "&";
          $replacements[1] = "<";
          $replacements[2] = ">";

          $description = preg_replace($patterns, $replacements, stripslashes($r['text']));

          $date = date(s('RSS_date_format'), strtotime($r['date']));

          $items .= "";
          $items .= "". $r['title'] ."";
          $items .= "". $date ."";
          $items .= "". $description ."";
          $items .= "". s(website) ."index.php?id=". $r['id'] ."";
          $items .= "
    ";
          }

       $theFullFeed = $header . $items . $footer;
       $fh = fopen($filename, "w+");
          fwrite($fh, $theFullFeed);
       fclose($fh);

       echo "";
    }

    This isn't me, hehe...you guessed that, eh ? It's clsc's contrubution in the mods section a bit down...I just changed something in it, not sure what, and that works on /patric_8 and /patric_9. Would it work here in the 1.4beta version... ?

    Not a bug, but I think, for a more acurate translation interface, I have added these 2 line in 'language variables' into 'snews.php':

    Code: [Select]
    $l['new_articles_label'] = "New articles:";  // Translate into your local language
    $l['past_articles_label'] = "Past Articles:";  // Translate into your local language

    And I have modified the 'index.php' of sNews14beta like this:
    (arround the line 37 & 40)
    Search this :

    Code: [Select]

    New articles:

    ...

    Past articles:

    And change to this:
    Code: [Select]

    ....

    Possible more to come, I've see looking...
    Thanks!

    Why do that if you can just change the normal text in

    the above is even smaller than
    Code: [Select]

    bearing in mind that we already have the ability to add DB prefixes..would it not be better to wait until stable code is released before trying to incorporate multi-lingual features? this is a feature that will no doubt be developed at a later date, where all articles could be language selectable?

    It sounds like Luka might have a solution for displaying multiple versions of the content [elsewhere on the forum]..at the moment I don't personally see the benefit in just translating the template..if the articles are going to be in just one language?

    I could be wrong though! ;D

    I think the system has to be "dummy-proof" So the less editing in the snews.php file, the better. It woeld be a lot easier AND flexibler to just leave the option for designers to change the language in the template.

    I think your suggestion (braamsyuur) would restrict designers. I for one would be the first to just delete the code there and just type the sentence in my own langauge.

    For instance, i'm planning to start a tutorial site, and I'm not going to call it "new articles", but "Latest tutorials"

    This would (will) be perfect if sNews goes multilingual, meaning that a visitor can chose his language. But then the whole system would neet to be translatable, every word used. But then the translations would be in separate lang files, so no editions had to be made in the snews.php to display the site multilingually

    oh don't get me wrong..I agree that multi-lingual would be a great feature..I just think that it would involve a great deal of code change and would add quite considerably to the size of snews.php..which is growing bit by bit

    What about instead having Sections above Categories..then your sections could be language specific, and your categories fall under that? just a thought  ;)

    Also I would like it to be multi-linguistic, but we wouldn't like it to grow to much, now would we ? We have already stated in another, possibly earlier in this, thread that it should be made stable as is, and then develop addons/mods/enhancements in whatever way may be...My strong opinion is that that should be considered settled.

    I think that this is just too much fuss for something that is not worth coding... :/ (no offence)

    in order to have a multilingual CMS you will need language files, different tables for each language and different category names and so different SEF urls...
    so...
    make an index that at default will include snews_english.php (contains english language and prefix english_) on index.php the user can choose a different language...
    this lag will be stored in session and/or a cookie...
    the index refreshes and checks for the cookie/session and then includes lets say the italian_snews.php that contains an italian language variables and has prefix italian_

    when the admin wants to write something in italian chooses the italian lang, logs in and adds it..
    all language_snews.php will have the same image folders, mysql username/pass/dbname but different prefixes... ^_^
    so all you have tochange is index.php and won't be more than 5 lines of code

    Hehe, arrrgh - Don't fondle me so hard, I'm delicate ;)...

    Analyzerx, this is why I think so highly of you, hehe... Ok, in my case it will almost certainly only be  bi-lingual site's, english and swedish. You mean that I, in laymens terms, could have like...two flags. Each representing one country, and by clicking one of'em the indexfile will swap lingo ? in 5 lines of code ? God, I've gotta learn PHP. I already got a book, hehe... But as a single parent I don't have time, unless I'd skip sleep and messing around with girls ;)...

    Would it be to much to ask you to show such a code snippet ? Still need to translate every article made though, hehe...But some fun must be left to the designer, right ?

    Post by: George Antoniadis on February 05, 2006, 03:00:25 am
    Patric you can try this somewhere to see how it works! ;)

    What you have to do first:

    First setup snews.php with your variables... (mysql, names, emails, etc)
    create copies of snews.php named for example:
    english-snews.php
    swedish-snews.php

    open each one, change the language variables to the correct language...
    and also add a prefix like swedish_ and english_ to each one... ;)

    create the tables with both english_ and swedish_ prefixes (you should have 6 tables for this example)
    and the open your index.php and replace the classic 2 first lines with this:
    Code: [Select]

    $change_language_to_default = 'english';

    $change_language_to = explode("/", $_GET['category']);
    $change_language_to_cat = $change_language_to[0];
    $change_language_to_tit = $change_language_to[1];

    $what_snews_to_inc = $_SESSION['what_snews_to_inc'];

    if (!$what_snews_to_inc) { $what_snews_to_inc = $change_language_to_default.'-snews.php'; };

    if ($change_language_to_cat=='change_language_to') {
    if (file_exists($change_language_to_tit.'-snews.php')) {
    $what_snews_to_inc = $change_language_to_tit.'-snews.php';
    } else {
    $what_snews_to_inc = $change_language_to_default.'-snews.php';
    };
    };
    $_SESSION['what_snews_to_inc'] = $what_snews_to_inc;
    include $what_snews_to_inc;

    ?>

    then you can add links in your index for users to change the site language...
    the url will be: ( snews installation is for ex: http://localhost/snews/ )

    for english: http://localhost/snews/change_language_to/english/
    for swedish: http://localhost/snews/change_language_to/swedish/

    ;) DON'T forget the / in the end!

    This is the start of it all! :P
    it's like having 2 sites but there is NO better way than having twice the tables... I can promice you that! ://
    (at least not for a while)

    play around kk? ;)

    really sorry if you were expecting something better! :(

    ps. has basic checks if file with language cannot be fount returns to the default language...
    ps2. if you want to actually use this I can make some better changes, add the variable to a cookie so the user always stays with the same lang...

    Neva' mind... Solved it, hehe... Think, if ONCE was todo as told, eh ? Hehe...

    Ok, one question though...there is things like the footer that stays the same for obvious reasons...one indexfile. Do I need to get myself another index.php...hehe. My first thought about this wasn't so wrong after all... I thought I would have to have, in fact, two different sites, one in swedish and one in english, in their own folders so to speak...Or ?

    EDIT --> BUG'S approatching...Ok, I have to language files goin. I have different prefixed tablessets for each. While logged into the swedish one...and clicking links on the english one I get directed to the swedish version and logged in...That with "$_SESSION[s('prefix')" in the snews.php...

    This is no good, right ?

    Mhmmm comments, should "follow" if possible...

    Analyzerx. How can I fix so that when clicking the flag I have in mind I come to the articles directly, and not like now: http://p-ahlqvist.com/sNews/1_4beta/
    To a page with no center content...you see ?

    I think what I want is really two sets of the site...There are some "fiddleing" here that don't go as I want it ;)... For ie I can do articles, get them to show up on the frontpage...but not click on them and get them to show.

    Besides, the to db_tablesets ARE talking to eachother... I posted a comment in the swedish_ tableset and it got it's way onto the english version as in got it's way into the english_tableset...

    Mhmm, more to do here I believe ;)

    OK, I'm not sure here, but I think that the future post function might be...off. I made a post and it showed up...I edited the post and pressed edit, and it was gone...could that be that the "publish" date do not change ? it remains the same as the first time I made the post... ?  I later found the article in "unpublished articles" but it took me some time ;)... I tried to edit the publish date -time to a actual future time, a cupla minutes...but it did not pop up. How is that supposed to work anyhow ? Is it supposed to pop up when time has come ? Well, it did not. So I had to cut and paste the article all over again, and delete the "unpublished" one...

    Is this possibly a bug, or is it me ?

    EDIT--> yupp, I'm sure...tried it out once more. Edited the post with the time in "publish date" unchanged, it disappeared. Tried to edit once more changing the "publish date" to a cuppla minutes into the future...Did not work...And noooo, I didn't check the "enable" check box in the first case ;)

    I just remebered...

    Someone asked about Archive, Contact and other links why haven't they been included.

    I don't know how to solve this issue cause someone wants those links under menu items, some want them under categories, some don't want the at all.

    I think that the best way would be to manually insert them where you want them..

    www.site.com/archives/
    www.site.com/contact/
    www.site.com/rss/

    Oh, thanks Luka... No I haven't tried out the RC1, will replace at once...Or when I get home ;). Thanks.

    About the archive/contact and those...Could we not just have them on each place ? And //commented ? That way it would be fairly easy to intruct anyone who don't know anything about PHP to take the // away in that section they would have the desired link to show up ??

    Just a thought on an easy way of having them but don't ;)

    Don't know if this is kinda relevant, but I've been playing around in the osCommerce code and I found that they also use SEF urls, but without the use of .htaccess.I found 2 sets of code which I think controle the whole thing, thus making it easy to just work with normal links, but when SEF is turned on, just change everything.

    First is in the application top
    Code: [Select]
     if (SEARCH_ENGINE_FRIENDLY_URLS == 'true') {
        if (strlen(getenv('PATH_INFO')) > 1) {
          $GET_array = array();
          $PHP_SELF = str_replace(getenv('PATH_INFO'), '', $PHP_SELF);
          $vars = explode('/', substr(getenv('PATH_INFO'), 1));
          for ($i=0, $n=sizeof($vars); $i<$n; $i++) {
            if (strpos($vars[$i], '[]')) {
              $GET_array[substr($vars[$i], 0, -2)][] = $vars[$i+1];
            } else {
              $HTTP_GET_VARS[$vars[$i]] = $vars[$i+1];
            }
            $i++;
          }

          if (sizeof($GET_array) > 0) {
            while (list($key, $value) = each($GET_array)) {
              $HTTP_GET_VARS[$key] = $value;
            }
          }
        }
      }

    Second is in the function to generate links
    Code: [Select]
     function tep_href_link($page = '', $parameters = '', $connection = 'NONSSL', $add_session_id = true, $search_engine_safe = true) {
        global $request_type, $session_started, $SID;

        if (!tep_not_null($page)) {
          die('

    Error!

    Unable to determine the page link!

    ');
        }

        if ($connection == 'NONSSL') {
     $link = HTTP_SERVER . DIR_WS_HTTP_CATALOG;
        } elseif ($connection == 'SSL') {
          if (ENABLE_SSL == true) {
            $link = HTTPS_SERVER . DIR_WS_HTTPS_CATALOG;
          } else {
            $link = HTTP_SERVER . DIR_WS_HTTP_CATALOG;
          }
        } else {
          die('

    Error!

    Unable to determine connection method on a link!

    Known methods: NONSSL SSL

    ');
        }

        if (tep_not_null($parameters)) {
          $link .= $page . '?' . strtr(trim($parameters), array('"' => '"'));
          $separator = '&';
        } else {
          $link .= $page;
          $separator = '?';
        }

        while ( (substr($link, -1) == '&') || (substr($link, -1) == '?') ) $link = substr($link, 0, -1);

    // Add the session ID when moving from different HTTP and HTTPS servers, or when SID is defined
        if ( ($add_session_id == true) && ($session_started == true) && (SESSION_FORCE_COOKIE_USE == 'False') ) {
          if (tep_not_null($SID)) {
            $_sid = $SID;
          } elseif ( ( ($request_type == 'NONSSL') && ($connection == 'SSL') && (ENABLE_SSL == true) ) || ( ($request_type == 'SSL') && ($connection == 'NONSSL') ) ) {
            if (HTTP_COOKIE_DOMAIN != HTTPS_COOKIE_DOMAIN) {
              $_sid = tep_session_name() . '=' . tep_session_id();
            }
          }
        }

        if ( (SEARCH_ENGINE_FRIENDLY_URLS == 'true') && ($search_engine_safe == true) ) {
          while (strstr($link, '&&')) $link = str_replace('&&', '&', $link);

          $link = str_replace('?', '/', $link);
          $link = str_replace('&', '/', $link);
          $link = str_replace('=', '/', $link);

          $separator = '?';
        }

        if (isset($_sid)) {
          $link .= $separator . tep_output_string($_sid);
        }

        return $link;
      }

    I kept looking at this cause it looks like some folks have problems with .htaccess, and this works clean with osCommerce

    Maybe you guys can find some inspiration in this code

    Hey JM, try this

    in the archive function replace

    Code: [Select]
    $cat_query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "categories";
    with

    Code: [Select]
    $cat_query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "categories WHERE published <> ''";
    works here, even though this is the flat file, SQL syntax is the same, so it should work.

    On a side note, I can't seem to get my past_articles to work, check www.iseeyou-designs.com and click on past_articles on the top of the page. When I want to show new_articles it does work.

    I've done this:

    Code: [Select]
    Read recent articles or past articles
    snews.php
    Code: [Select]
    // CENTER
    ...
    case "new_articles":
    new_articles(4);
    break;
    case "past_articles":
    past_articles(3,3);
    break;
    ...

    EDIT: ah wait, is this function bound to the category-page it is included on? Or can I have it show articles from all the categories together?
    Code: [Select]
    // PAST ARTICLES
    if (isset($_GET['category']) <> 0) { $category = $_GET['category']; } else { $category = 0; };

    Hi, Nado.
    Your problem is really strange, I have done thousands of tests with multiple installations in different types of
    directories and I never had this type of problems. I believe that your problem resides in some erroneous
    configuration in your .htaccess or configuration of snews. It is not necessary to modify anything inside the
    code of snews that you indicate in order that it should work.
    Can you post your snews and htaccess configuration here?
    Thanks,

    Well, I was able to find this code and I've replaced it with what you had suggested but the problem still persists.

    Is there any temporary file or something that the search engine uses that I should delete so the engine creates it again (like an index or something)?

    @Dom:
    Can you put a link to download your snews.php?
    I don't know where is your problem... maybe I can test into my server and see what's
    happens...
    Thanks,
    bram.

    bram, I might have found something...

    I was just doing something in phpMyAdmin and discovered that all my articles in the database have the value "1" in 'published' field, the ones that ARE published and the ones that ARE NOT published and still show under "Unpublished articles" when I'm logged-in.

    So, I tried changing one of the articles' 'published' table values into "0" (that was one of those unpublished articles) and then tried searching for a word I knew only this article contains - nevertheless, this article showed as a result of the search.

    Then, without looking at the database again, I created a test article, making it unpublished just to see if the 'published' value in the database would be different... I opened phpMyAdmin - and all my articles had the value "1" anyway, even the one of which the value I manually changed just few minutes ago.

    So, does anybody have any idea what's happening here? Maybe I assumed wrong about the value "0" that should be there if the article is unpublished?

    Of course, probably the easiest way out of this is not having unpublished articles you don't want showing up in search results... but something is not working as it should here...

    @Dom:
    I've not found a solution about your problem... really curious... In my tables, all the articles, published or not, they have the same value in published field (1), but, for me, all work correctly... If my article marked as 'not published' these article don't show when your search and don't show when your open 'archives' section.... really this is a ghost problem... but I'll continue searching why this happens.
    Have you tried to create another database and check this problem with it? Maybe is a posible solution...

    @bram:
    Actually, these unpublished articles don't apear in archives section for me either, they're just brought up whenever I do a search and they contain the search term...
    Thanks for trying, and I would try your suggestion with creating another database but unfortunatelly, I can have only two MySQL databases and both are taken...
    For now I have simply stored these unpublished articles on my PC in a txt file instead on the server. Sometimes the simpliest solutions work the best ;) good thing this is only my sNews, which implies I somehow managed to broke it...

    Just a posible solution with the search returning the unpublished articles.

    Look for this line in the search function
    Code: [Select]
    $query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "articles WHERE title LIKE '$search_query_var' || text LIKE '$search_query_var' AND position <> 2 AND published = 1 ORDER BY id DESC";change it to this:
    Code: [Select]
    $query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "articles WHERE title LIKE '$search_query_var' || text LIKE '$search_query_var' AND position <> 2 AND position != 4 AND published = 1 ORDER BY id DESC";might be the solution to the problem.

    cheers

    Thanks dobey, but unfortunately this didn't solve the problem.

    BTW, what does this do to the search engine?

    Here is how my search function looks like now:
    Code: [Select]
    // SEARCH ENGINE
    function search() {
    $search_query = clean($_POST['search_query']);
    $search_query_var = "%".$search_query."%";
    echo "

    ". l(search_results) ."

    ";
    if (strlen($search_query) < 4) {
    echo "

    ". l(charerror) ."

    ";
    } else {
    $query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "articles WHERE title LIKE '$search_query_var' || text LIKE '$search_query_var' AND position <> 2 AND position != 4 AND published = 1 ORDER BY id DESC";
    $result = mysql_query($query);
    while ($r = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
    $num++;
    $date = date(s('date_format'), strtotime($r['date']));
    echo "

    " .$r['title']. " > " . $date. "

    ";
    }
    if ($num == "") { echo "

    ". l('noresults') ." " . $search_query . ".

    ";
    $num = "0";
    } else { echo "

    " . $num . " ". l('resultsfound') ." " . $search_query . ".

    "; }}
    echo "

    ". l('backhome') ."

    ";
    }

    Hi Dom,
    What about using prefixes in an existing database for make your new database and make your test whit it?
    Only a suggestion...
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the suggestion bram, but since I'm only a newbie in SQL, I'd need some help with it so I don't damage my existing data. Could you please provide me with the exact SQL query I should run in phpMyAdmin? I can assume how it should look like but I would like to be sure before I do anything.

    OK, I have first created a set of new tables with a prefix which I defined in snews.php as per instructions. I used my current snews.php file for this test (copied it in a subfolder and edited the global settings).
    Like that I couldn't create new articles - I'd login, create a new article (published) and there would be no article after that (checked the database - it was empty). Since I added some new functions like meta tags mod I thought maybe this mod is a problem since it enables writing information into two new fields, which I didn't create this time in the databse - so I moved the mod and tried again. Same result. I'd create an article and it wouldn't be written into the database.

    I had to try it with the current snews.php file so I could determine whether the problem is in it or not. But I was now tired of this not working and I replaced the snews.php with the new one (fresh download).
    I was now able to create articles and they would nicely show up immediatelly after being created so it was time to test - I created a new, unpublished article, searched for it, and guess what - it showed up in search results.

    What does this tell us? The problem obvioulsy isn't in my modified snews.php file. So where is it? Could it be something server related?

    @Dom:
    I've found a solucija!!!
    Finding into this forum I've found a solution using a Matt's Search function and modified for not showing unpublished records in the search.
    Try to change your SEARCH FUNCTION with this one:
    Code: [Select]
    function search() {
        $search_query = clean($_POST['search_query']);
        $search_query_var = "%".$search_query."%";
        echo "

    ". l(search_results) ."

    ";
        if (strlen($search_query) < 3) {
            echo "

    ". l(charerror) ."

    ";
        } else {
            // Matt 11/3/06 13:24 - build up the SQL query so we can use multiple keywords
            $keywords = explode(" ",$search_query);
            $query = "SELECT * FROM " .s('prefix'). "articles WHERE";
            if (count($keywords) >= 2) {
                for ($i=0;$i                $query = $query . " (title LIKE '%$keywords[$i]%' || text LIKE '%$keywords[$i]%') ||";
                }
                $j = count($keywords)-1;
                $query = $query . " (title LIKE '%$keywords[$j]%' || text LIKE '%$keywords[$j]%')";
            } else {
                $query = $query . " (title LIKE '%$keywords[0]%' || text LIKE '%$keywords[0]%')";
            }
            $query = $query . " AND position <> 2 AND position != 4 ORDER BY id DESC";
            // ttaM
            $result = mysql_query($query);
            while ($r = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
                $num++;
                $date = date(s('date_format'), strtotime($r['date']));
                echo "

    " .$r['title'].
    "
    > " . $date. "

    ";
            }
        if ($num == "") { echo "

    ". l('noresults') ." " . $search_query . ".

    ";
            $num = "0";
        } else { echo "

    " . $num . " ". l('resultsfound') ." " . $search_query . ".

    "; }}

        echo "

    ". l('backhome') ."

    ";
    }
    With this code, not only don't show unpublished articles in your search, apart, you can search multiple keywords, for example: snews templates
