mySQL suggestion from my hosting company
« on: March 20, 2009, 01:17:37 PM »

My site was is running very slowly at the moment, 8-9 seconds to load a page so I asked my hosting company if there was a problem at their end and they replied with the following. I'm not an expert on mySQL but will this actually help? Thanks

Thank you for your query

We have experienced issues with the mySQL14 database which may well be the cause of the problem. Whilst we are rectifying the performance issue on this server, we have also deployed a new database server.

Take a backup of your existing database using phpMyAdmin.

There are two lines of code to remove from the sql you have downloaded. Please open this file in an editor and remove or comment out the following (this is very near the top of page):

CREATE DATABASE `` DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;
USE ``;

Log into your control panel and deploy a new MySQL database. Upload the recent backup onto the new database. Edit your config file to connect your site to the new database.

Well, if a hosting company admits having issues and offers another database server.... that makes sense.
Which package are you using, by the way?

They are just asking you to run a back-up of your existing dbase, save it to your computer, edit out the character-set bits, create a new dbase on their 'other' dbase server and populate it with your back-up file.

As Joost says... they've admitted to having issues on the existing server and are encouraging you to move it.

Ah :D

This is the package I am using -

I actually have another problem. The site runs fine in Firefox but with internet explorer I get a message
Quote
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site http://www.mysite.com/.

Operation Aborted"

Note the extra dot/fullstop after the trailing slash in the address. I cannot for the life of me figure out where this is coming from. Firefox seems to remove and ignore it. Does anyone have similar experience?

thanks

Well it looks like something was conflicting with the 'Share This' widget I had added

Explorer just didn't like it for some reason
