META Data Character Limitation?
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:47:10 PM »

I am using Snews 1.6 with the differential template. One thing that I noticed is that my META data for site description gets truncated at about 60 characters. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Cheers,

Olagoo

Yes, I have... I have thought about it each time I wanted to add a longer description, then forgot about it afterwards. But, yes, I have noticed that aswell... You can type away, but coming there again checking out what have been typed in, you find that it's been cut of.

Use phpMyAdmin to increase description_meta (open articles table and execute this SQL statement):

Code: [Select]
ALTER TABLE PREFIX_articles MODIFY description_meta VARCHAR( 255 )
Don't forget to change PREFIX. 255 chars is more than enough. It's a mistake in original sNews SQL Dump that meta tags are limited at 100 chars.
You can also change keywords_meta to VARCHAR(255) just to make the update complete.

Hi Armen,

Thanks for this reply. I apologize in advance for being dense, but I did as you said and see the updates in the corresponding tables, but the description and keywords still get truncated as they were before. Any suggestions?

Please note: I have changed the values to precisely what you mentioned in the post. However, 100 char is still the max. I am not getting more than 100 with the new values.

Cheers,

Yep! i found it!

... site meta description .... said Olagoo ...

And every time, we looked at meta description in article table. But there everything is ok. Still, description get truncated at 60 chars...

Because of ... settings table :P . Yes, there the length is maximum 60.

I suggest changing name field at 50 (from 20) and value field at 255 (from 60).
