User Suggested Roadmap
« on: April 08, 2008, 12:15:22 AM »

Some users have suggested a roadmap for sNews.  So here is your chance to voice your opinion for the next versions (or point release if there is one).

Please think about what sNews is before anything too extravagant like OpenID inclusion for instance.  sNews is simple to use and maintains to be a core engine.

I would suggest a list of 5 wants/needs for each upcoming release like so:
Quote
Version 1.8
1. XYZ
2. XYZ
3. XYZ
4. XYZ
5. XYZ

Version 1.9
etc etc

My personal roadmap:

1.8
1. Subpages/articles  - if not implemented in 1.7
2. SEF switcher - Important for users without htaccess and users coming from different blog engines
3. Keyword Cloud - not really needed
4. Update to Admin section... help, tooltips, etc
5. Multiple template mod (mine of course)

f*** 1.9

2.0 (drastic change)
1. INSTALLER!
2. WP like Plug in capability and API
3. Section modification
4. AJAX/AHAH to core - comments, admin, etc
5. Multi database implementation (sqlite!)

Excellent! I like it.

Is it possible to have a database migration tool, i.e. wordpress -> snews for people who jump ship to snews?

If someone wrote a mod for it... but I think something like that should stay a mod IMO.  I think preserving a users previous URL structure is important and has been discussed many times in passing. Also going from a rewrite to non-rewrite has already been done.  I don't see why one couldn't go into different url structures as needed.

1st, sNews goals should be defined first.
What does it want to be when it becomes adult?
Still a blogware (written by geeks as it is today) or a real CMS?

If it goes CMS it should :
1/ be pluggable
2/ be multiusers
3/ be multilingual
4/ has a template manager
5/ support versionning
6/ offer a workflow Management

Have a nice day.

And that needs to be decided quickly before we end up somewhere in the middle, loosing users on both fronts... My vote is to leave it as it is today, a blogware, if that's the right term. Some things that have been suggested here, like Installer, the plug-in capability etc... would be very nice but not sNews IMHO.

I think it has been said multiple times what sNews is... a CMS not blogware... thought the fact that is mainly a category/journal with comments leads it to be a blog....

My vote.. CMS

1. Agreed
2. Why?  Not every CMS and every site is a multiuser site.
3. sNews is sort of.  With the way it is for the Beta/RC it can be done easily
4. Agreed!
5. Why?
6. In a small lightweight CMS core?!?!?! No, let it be an addon or mod, not a "core" item

Not sNews... let me give my opinion what should not be in the sNews core...

OpenID, social bookmarking, jquery, mootools, gravatar, askimet, sNews add ons (why add it to the core?), pingers, texty, markup, google anything, ec etc

In a professional environment this is requested: concurrent access for content authoring

5. Why?
I meant for pages and articles: in companies, users want to keep several versions of a document

I think this feature needs to exist in an sNews MU.
An author creates a draft, the validator is notified that the draft is ready to be edited, and so on....

EDITION: don't misunderstand. This is my opinion of a what a professional CMS should do.
In my case, I use sNews for blogging purpose and I've chosen it since I think it is the best one (and more of that, I love to be a snooze in this community) :-)

Philippe is right. Roadmaps should not be about which features to add, but be more abstract.

As I see it, sNews has reached its limits. For it to "grow", it should be redesigned. Let the 1.x series live for a few years and meanwhile start off with a fresh 2.x series.
Although I don't believe in small systems that can do everything, I think the 2.x series can be blog and cms as well, no big deal. I think it is all the bling bling added that makes sNews loosing it simplicity.
So with quality code and focus on core functionality, I think we can make sNews 2.x a true "lightweight elegance" again. Better optimized and still with an impressive amount of standard features.
Snews should not follow hypes like OpenID and what else the future may bring.
Snews must a simple system for webdesigners, bloggers and small businesses. You cannot built a great system that suits all, so make a system that fits some.

Joost A. is right.  ;)
Question is not about features and so on, but needs.
Then one's can tell which functions are needed.
First maybe the team together with a few snoozers should talk about the "Big Picture", I mean this ultimate Core Version, for the minimal needs.

That's good. That means you won't be needing it. ;)

Joost, Sven,

None of my ideas were not based on needs?  That's fine I guess.

Now back to you Joost.  If a rewrite is needed then so be it,  I think I mentioned that once or twice.

Now onto roadmaps.. I think they should have feature set as well, including ideas on where it should go, but not be too abstract so when developing a new version, a checklist can be made by going back to the roadmap...

Just my opinion...

And since we are comparing WP to sNews...
