Separated page for blog
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:59:03 PM »

Well, this can be like this:

Suppose, we have a static page Welcome, and categories with articles:

| Welcome |  Blog |

I have the possibility to set as home page, a static page or the blog itself. When I set the page Welcome as home page, I have this situation:

| Home | Blog |

And when I set the Blog (articles) as home page, I have this:

| Home | Welcome |

Is non-sens when I have a static page as home page to not gain access to an entire blog from a single item menu! This is not a good functionality.

Do you mean you want a list or menu of blog articles set on the home page, while displaying a welcome mesage/introduction at the same time? Say, a mixture of page and articles?

No Joost. Like Wordpress. When I have a static page set as home page, clicking on Blog option menu, leads me to HOME PAGE on blog, where I can see articles as if they where set as home page in sNews. Uff, my english....

In sNews, if you set Articles as home page, instead of a static page, you have a blog (seeing articles in chronological order, from all categories).... but if a static page is set as home page, you can`t see articles as a blog, you can access articles only clicking on one category.... adios blog as is defined on other blog systems....

-----------------------
When you set a static page as home page (by example, Welcome page), his name is hidden from main menu. In this moment, another option from menu become visible :option Blog. Clicking on that option ,I can see articles on first page, as home page, but when I click on Home option from menu, leads me to Welcome page again.

When you set Articles as home page, Blog option from menu became invisible and option Home is assigned to Articles. In this moment, option Welcome become visible because is no more set as homepage....this is the mechanism in Wordpress

------------------------
Replace Blog with News.....

Did you solve this question Fun?
I've almost the same querry:
- having a specific page when landing on the site
- a "blog" button in the navigation menu to go to page 1 of the blog pagination

I don't care that home button leads back to the landing page.
I just wish to have a link like :
Quote
yoursite.com/home/p_1/
to drive vistors to the blog.(this one doesn't work: it leads to the landing page)
Anyone knows which link I should have?
Thanks for replying.
Have a nice day,
Sven

No, I don`t know if I can... maybe I can...
But sNews Dudes don`t think is good to have this... They think actual solution is ok but they are wrong! And you know why?
Because they are not bloggers like as or others....

I will let you know if I will solve this...

We don`t target Wordpress functionality, but we want Wordpress users....

I think I saw something like this on Bakercad site!!
And I still think sNews is not well designed in this zone...and in this zone can loose users....

With that logic.. wouldn't it be better to say:
With Wordpress functionality, we could gain Wordpress users

Mister Sven,

We can do something like this:

We can define another case in center function:

after this code:
   switch ($action) {
We can put the case;
           case 'blog':
and here we can copy the code (not all) from default: make it display published articles without checking if is Displaying on home page checked.....
           break;

Of course, that blog word must be inserted in SEF array and modified also the function displaying menu options... where is Home,Archive, Sitemap,Contact.....

--------------------------------------------------------
So, is possible.. and time will tell if it was a good move......

Maybe... just maybe... this recently posted Sub Pages Mod is what you guys are looking for. This mod is added to a default sNews 1.6 package and does not need any database changes to run so it runs with a default 1.6 4-table database. To install... just replace the default snews.php and index.php files in a default package with these ones and it runs for testing purposes. Any page you create... you can add sub-pages to it and... when on a page that has sub-pages... you get a Sub Pages menu listing the links to all the sub pages.

I like the subpages mod, but I am not sure it would be the best way to handle subpages as it is based off the category column in the articles table.  This hinders expandability.  Maybe just adding a column called sub to the articles table.

Then again... adding categories to pages (not pages to categories) this mod could be done....

Section mod can do this as well... but none of these ideas are done

Mister Sven,

It is done!  :)
I worked on my package, with SEF switcher from EQ, but i will make modifications also for standard package and post it to programming because it needs a little code cleanup. Anyway, it works as we want  ;D

Hi all,
my first post here, my first project developed with snews and my first problem solved with this mod. Thanks funlw65!

But... I can't make it work when I set other language than default EN. I'm using the spanish translation http://snewscms.com/forum/index.php?topic=4558.0 and i've added the new lang variable ($l['blog'] = 'Blog'; ) there. I can see the new link Blog but I get a "Content can't be found" message in example.com/blog. Of course, it's working with the same index.php and snews.php and lang set to EN.

Some ideas?

Thanks and sorry for my english  :-\

Hello my friends :)

fun, if i understand, i think this could done as:
set up extra() function to hold the "welcome page"
under it on index the center() function, now if we set
blog to show on index and we set the "welcome" extra article to show only on home.

am i in the right direction here ? lol :)

awesome day
