BREAK sometimes does not functioning well
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:21:34 AM »

Hello,

On my fresh blog, i have exerienced problems with the [BREAK] element. For example at my last article http://www.henrich.ro/asta-e-parerea-mea-domle/intuitia-omului/ has totally no effect, i can't break the text, i need it to post in one piece. Other posts are ok, this thing i have experienced also on other articles.

Just equilni's keyword cloud mod is influencing this and Bob's smilies, but where is the logic if at some articles is working?? Did zou experienced similar problems? What is the solution?

Thanks.

How do you mean?? You don't want that article to use the [break], or you have put it in,but it isn't working?

Output source code, with blue the problem section:

I decided to use a testplace for this, beacuse it's not good to make test on the online site: http://www.virtualmz.com/blognew/ and the article http://www.virtualmz.com/blognew/asta-e-parerea-mea/intuitia-omului/

I would suggest trying the same article without either of the MODs applied (ie a default sNews installation) to eliminate the possibility that the MODs are not causing this behaviour.

I've been having problems with the BREAK thingy for some time as well... it hasn't worked for me for quite a while and I have to admit that I haven't bothered to figure out why... and that's mainly because it only applies to articles and I favor using pages over articles in the sites I create. So... while I can't offer any assistance to you Henrich... I will be interested in whatever solution comes your way. It might just solve my problem as well.  :)

Sorry, no results for me :( It seems the code to be ok, initially i was thought that it is because one of my categories has the ' sign inside it, but then i discovered that on other long articles in the same categories works well with the BREAK, also i discovered similar problems with BREAK on other categories with "normal" names like: "category1", "category2" I have no solution yet and i am very disappointed, i know at least 5 very important (base) mods with important bugs and i can't help on them. I think most important is to solve current bugs instead version 1.7 I am sorry that i can't help yet!

The problem has appeared again. It is getting unsupportable!  >:(

Can be this line?

Code: [Select]
if (!empty($currentPage)) {$short_display = strpos($text, '[break]'); $shorten = $short_display == 0 ? 9999000 : $short_display;}
else {$shorten = 9999000;}

I know for a fact that this, in my case, was due to modding my snews.php. I had somone (can't remember who, though) go over my snews.php when having this problem, and it was sorted out... I think ;) so I've been where you're at, now henrich, but like Doug i can't offer you anything to solve this... but a cool beer, perhaps. It might not solve things, but it could make it easier for you ;)

@ Henrich... this problem was identified quite some time ago and it was discussed a good bit on these Forums at the time (tho I cannot remember when ATM). It happens when the [break] is applied within an image file-path string in your content. When you remove the file-path string from your content... the problem goes away. So... the solution to this is to make sure your image file-path string is positioned in your content at a point that is beyond the [break] point... or well enough before it so that all of the string will be before the break-point.  ;)

Yes, I noticed the image path thingie myself. The problem really gets in the way when a non-html-savvy person updates content on an snews driven site ...
I also noticed that if I install TinyMCE for a client, the risk of suc an occurance almost disapears, because tinymce automatically inserts a <p> tag arround the [break], thus separating it sintactically from any previous code.

Hmmm... never tried that before. Are you suggesting that wrapping the break-tag in P-tags solves the problem?

It definitely did it for me! errr ... I mean for some of my users (content editors) that really don't know anything about things like this ;)
It did, however, rise other problems, which are beyond the scope of this thread ...

Anyways, the short answer is: yes, I think so, based on previous experience (which is not so big, considering that I first used snews for a live site in november last year).

PS: there's also a validation issue ([break] actually breaks the paragraph that surounds it, that's what got my attention in the first place).
I'll test some more tomorrow, it's 3AM here and I barely see what I type!
Nighty night!

I tried also the p tag. Did not worked for me. The single solution until now is to not use images before break. Still searching and testing. That section of the code is affected only by the smilies mod from Bob, if i'm not wrong.
