Control Panel

So I've been playing with the Control Panel today.

We can achieve live css, layout and options editing. I'll just have to explore the possible vurnerabillities.
One of the ideas: You have 4 columns on the front page and you want only 2 when viewing some content. I've already found a way to to do this but there could be a simpler way in the control panel. The system checks whether a category or article is in the url and according to that displays certain columns. The way to do this the easy way is to just select automatically extracted columns from the css file and select what you want. This could really give you the total control over your site.

Code automatically extracts your css content, settings and language variables and you can edit your entire site on the fly.

EDIT:

Also, we could move all administrative options for adding categories and articles to control panel. File upload and directory listing...

Hi Luka

that sounds very good.

Are you to open a file at 777 to right to it,  then close the file to say 644

wll you be able to see all the files in the directory ?

I'm sure hoping to read all files and get the most of it.

I've done some real progress today. For instance, I'm nearly done with the save report.
It saves all relevant data regarding your sNews setup in a txt file which you can paste on the forum and we know exactly what's wrong. Some info about php version and other stuff...

Excellent idea Luka..that would aid in diagnosing problems no end

but my concerns would be the same as Alberts..what security measures could be in place to prevent this file from being seen or snatched off the server..that could cause some problems? ;)

So I worked all day on the Installation file and console I'm testing on Solucija.

I could really want to hear your thoughts and opinions on this one.

Installation as well as the console could be implemented into sNews and could give you a total control.
You could:
Edit all settings on the fly
change your css on the fly
Install sNews...

But that leads to a larger file...

Also I was testing another thing I was working on. Every column you have on your site would be dynamic and could be content dependant. The idea is to have a total control over your site from admin area.

Sounds good to me! I'd definately want to check that out. Perhaps have sNews in 'light' and 'full' version? If you could separate that admin area from sNews itself then you could do light and full version where light would not have the admin area (= new users + smaller package) and full would have admin area (= more advanced users + bigger package). Just my 0.02€

I agree with JM..we need to maybe offer two versions if the Control Panel would add a lot to the code, and involve users in a steeper learning curve to get the functionality they want. Not all users would need what is proposed, and we could run the danger of moving sNews into a level which tries to compete with older more established publishing systems

It's greatest appeal is it's simplicity, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be a development platform for those that would like to take it further..my 2 pennies also ;D

It might be a good idea to think about a "backup" button.

Editing snews can be difficult for the "newbies" ... quite long read if you know what i mean

Also, in respect to the issue of backups maybe a cvs setting could be established that backs up all data in folder to another directory.

basically boils down to a:  Backup Button

There's a MOD for PunBB, called SQL DB Backup. It backups everything stored only by your forum with your prefixes.

You can get that mod at the PunBB site if you need. It would be a nice addon (maybe even separate file) to create such mod (I mean built-in function) for sNews...

And. The idea of total control makes me jump! Go on!
