Issues on clean install - perhaps mod_rewrite problem
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:06:43 PM »

Hi everybody,

I just tried to install a clean copy of sNews (latest version posted on website: (sNews 1.5.30 - DesignCriativo).
I have followed all steps mentioned in readme.html, I uploaded all files to the server (not localhost), I edited the snews.php and entered the correct parameters. I even chmod'ed img folder to 777.

Now the problem: when I try to acces the site, I get a "Fedora Test Page" like there would be no index.php file present. I checked the server settings with a phpinfo(); and I strongly belive that the mod_rewrite is enabled:
Quote
Loaded Modules: mod_rewrite
The index page only seems to load when I disable the .htaccess file (by renaming it). And when it does load, I can't follow any links on the page and keep getting "404 - not found" error. I'm sure there's an error with the mod_rewrite, but I just can't figure out where.

I searched the forum before posting, but couldn't find a solution to this problem. I mention I don't run my own server, so don't have access to php.ini or http.conf.

Hope somebody can give me some tips, thanks.

Issues on clean install - perhaps mod_rewrite problem

If you have installed the sNews package (all files and folders) in your domain's root directory (usually public_html)... with the correct settings in the configuration section at the top of snews.php... and your database is set up correctly... you should get the home page OK with .htaccess enabled.

1. You don't want to use version 1.5.30 - it has serious security issues and will be easily hacked. You want to install the 1.5.31 version, and replace your database tables with the ones for 1.5.31 so that you have the correct values in the settings table for the username and password.

2. If you install sNews in a sub-directory in your domain root, then you need to enable and change the RewriteBase string in the .htaccess file, so that the folder name is at the end of that string.

I installed sNews in the root folder. But I'll delete everything (including the database) and will try again with 1.5.31. I'll post back within minutes. And thank you for the quick reply.

[installed 1.5.31 in the meanwhile]

... and keep having the same problem.

Installation:
 - installed to root directory
 - created the tables in the database through phpmyadmin (everything went flawless)
 - connecting to mysql through localhost (same machine, so no error there)
 - using original content of downloaded zip file

same problem as mentioned in first post.
Any suggestions on what I might try next ?
=======================
[later edit]
i just installed xampp as local server and got both the server and sNews running within minutes, so I'm doing the installation correct. But what could be wrong with the online server ... ?

I got the same problem. Here is the tip to correct it. Open up the .htaccess file in your editor and add the line

Options +FollowSymLinks

before the line

RewriteEngine On

This solved my problem. I think your problem will also get solved.

@amoros:
Welcome to this forum community! ;)
Well, first of all, if you get an error 500 surely you have not active the mod_rewrite into your apache server (locally or in a hosting plan). Please, verify that the mod_rewrite is _really_ loaded and active into your server. Check (in local environment) if the module mod_rewrite.so is loaded into your apache httpd.conf or in a hosting plan, check via phpinfo() (if you don't know how to create the phpinfo, please find it into this forum) if the module mod_rewrite was loaded.

hi bramsyuur ! thanks for answering !
I contacted my provider (globat) and this is or conversation:
Thank you for contacting Globat Support. A support agent will assist you shortly. You are number 1 in the queue. Your wait time will be approximately 2 minute(s) and 30 seconds

Thank you for contacting Globat Chat Support. You are now chatting with Technical Specialist 'Felice'
Felice: Hi and thank you for contacting Globat Signature Support! We have received your question (s) from the pre-chat survey and will answer you momentarily.  Thank you for your patience.
Felice: Hi, upon checking  mod_rewrite is activated on your server.
Felice: Did you have any other questions, I can assist you with?
amaury: I try to install sNEWS since 3 days and I can not get it working. sNews will become our cms for the 3 sites, so it is very important for us to have it working.
How can I get the apache configuration for my server ??
phpinfo is not giving any info on Apache
Felice: Ok for more informations:
Felice: Some apache commands are no longer supported in .htaccess or .htconfig due to security concerns:
Felice:
Felice: Action
Felice: AddCharSet
Felice: AddEncoding
Felice: AddLanguage
Felice: AddType
Felice: BrowserMatch
Felice: BrowserMatchNoCase
Felice: CookieTracking
Felice: DefaultLanguage
Felice: DefaultType
Felice: ErrorDocument
Felice: ErrorHeader
Felice: Header
Felice: LanguagePriority
Felice: Options
Felice: PassEnv
Felice: Redirect
Felice: RedirectMatch
Felice: RedirectPermanent
Felice: RedirectTemporary
Felice: SetEnv
Felice: SetEnvIf
Felice: SetEnvIfNoCase
Felice: UnsetEnv

Does this tell anything why sNews does give 404  or 500 errors ??

@ Amoros:
What you've provided doesn't tell me much... other than that you should start shopping for a web host that will meet the specifications you need to run sNews without problems. When your ISP guy says they can't do this "for security" reasons... that translates into... "we are still learning how to make our servers secure and we don't trust our customers." There are many ISPs who don't feel the need to restrict the use of mod_rewrite in Apache.
