Article Expiration
« on: February 02, 2006, 07:59:02 PM »

I'm not sure if this has been added in v1.4, as I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but is there a way to set an expiration date for an article?  When an article expirers, it would be removed from the main page and added to the archive.  Does sNews contain this functionality?

At this time, sNews does not support this function.

There are two ways to solve this problem:

1) Adjust the system to automatically unpublish articles upon their 10th day.

2) Add this option when adding the article.

The second option would require some brainstorming. Upon expiration, the article can be unpublished, stored in the archives or something else.

Thanks for explanations.  I'm going to look into adding the expiration functionality as a new article function. :)

Hello Phil,

have you figured out yet how to offer the option of a certain expiration date? That's exactly what I am looking for as well... Or do you know of a CMS that already offers this option? If so, one could have a look at that and then try to re-engineer that for sNews.

Regards,

Martin

Hello everybody,

am still looking for a simple CMS that will do the job of expiring articles or a mod for snews - if somebody is in the know or willing to program one, I am more then willing to make a donation to snews (to make it publicly available :D ) or the programmer (then for my exclusive use :P ) - whichever you prefer.

Thanks again for your attention,

Martin

I have a couple of questions regarding article expiration feature program flow:
- article is created and published on index/ category page
- it resides there for a certain time (let's say, 10 days)
- then it gets unpublished/ archived/ deleted/ something else (what exactly?)
- what will be displayed on index page if the last article is unpublished and the new one hasn't been created during that 10 days cycle period?

Well ... nothing except a lot of extra boxes with last articles, most popular articles, etc. After all if all content was designed to expire then that's it.
In reality I assume that there always will be mix of articles set to expire after some time and permanent ones.

Assumption is not good enough - you've got the point with your reality ;) but I need to cover every possible angle, and the extreme situation would be lack of permanent article visible on index - what to display if all of them are expired?

I would think... and this is just a thought... that you'd want to have article expiration available as an option like the "Publish Date option. In this way, all articles remain as they are... and you would choose to set an expiry date for a specific article when you create it. In this way, the expiry date would only apply to a specific article and not be applied to all articles by default. Once an article reaches the expiry date, it would then be removed from the active articles lists and be automatically removed from the articles table in the dbase. This would eliminate the need for additional admin work.

My suggestion is along availability of following options:
 - global expiration time (specific number of days, if set empty then nothing ever expires by default)
 - article specific expiration time (specific number of days, if set empty then global expiration takes precedence)
 - article marked as permanent (active always, never mind any expiration times)

But beware of oversmarting this CMS:
No automatic removal of articles from database tables. If anyone needs this - make it as a mod; but by default all content should be removable only by conscious or not so ;) action of competent or again not so ;P site admin.

 Waiting eagerly for stable 1.5

And if all has expired ... then it's just it - site has come to an end if temporary - nothing more to say  :P

Mika, I believe that the points made by keyrocks and codetwist makes sense in that you don't necessarily need active articles to be displayed - they could be moved to the archive just on that set expiration date instead of the global expriation after XX days.
The reason I want to be able to set expiring articles with a certain date is that one of my pages provides information about travel packages - which are mostly bookable to a certain date. After that, it wouldn't make sense to publish it on the main page...
