I'm not sure that thread answers the question brauck..

I believe what neo is trying to achieve is to remove the /home portion from the URL website.com/home/products part of the URL, not simply rename it.

Unfortunately I do not know if this is possible.

Removing home from the URL - http:// mysite.com/home/my-love-of-camaros/ - is easy. Well... we cannot remove it but we can change it to something else... from the admin Site Settings panel. When you expand the "Site Settings" panel, look in the second field, titled "Home SEF (use as link to Home)". The default value in there is... home. You can change this to any other word you like, then save your settings. Let's say we change it to "cars"... then the URL will read - http:// mysite.com/cars/my-love-of-camaros/ . Now... if you choose to leave the field absolutely empty, the URL would read - http:// mysite.com/-/my-love-of-camaros/ .

I know that I can change "home" to anything else, but what if I want to remove it completely? Even remove the "-"?

You can't. If you remove it completely you'll make snews lookup the category with the name of the page you requested.

So, no. You can't.

No - you cannot remove it completely. The field in the Site Settings panel must have a value in it. This gets saved into Row #2 - home_sef - in the settings table (dbase) which also must have a value in it. Removing the value altogether... and removing the default value in the language variable - $l['home_sef'] = 'home'; - will result in the following error:
Quote
Warning: mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in ... snews.php on... (line number)
Content not found
The line number is not that important... what it means is that the article content cannot be found... because the value must be present in order for the article to be found within the database and generated through the center() function. The only way this could be removed would be to re-write the code which governs positioning and link generation... and that would result in a whole other version of sNews. I would not go there.

In the present design of snews I can understand that it can not be taken out completely as it is required by the system for sorting.

But I think it should be possible by little bit rewritting in way that it will search for the article by it name after http:/www.xyz.com .Assuming that following are two article :-

http:/www.xyz.com/I-love-cake.html
http:/www.xyz.com/I-read-books.html

So when system tries to locate the information in the database than it should search for  " I Love Cake" and "I  Read Books" in the defined standard database  name of " snews" in the "articles" table.

I think that while creating the any article there should be option whether it shuold be create in the root folder itself or in some folder. This should not be difficult .This method will also help in avoiding duplicate content under root folder / chosen folder.

If we can control the creation of any article under root folder / folder / sub folder / sub sub folder ...etc than it will also help in giving birth to many derivative like link directory etc.

At present I am learning & exploring sNews so it may take some time before I can do some research / trial etc.

I appreciate the good work done by sNews creators and active community.Let us make it better.

The possibilities you describe may well be possible. I an not able to verify it though, as I have not seen these possibilities discussed or explored anywhere on these Forums yet. As you are beginning to discover, new ideas for using sNews are only explored when someone chooses to explore and test it on their own. And, if it works out... the discoverer usually posts his or her results here on the Forums in the form of a MOD or ADDON and shares it with the rest of our members.

Your suggestions and ideas are all worth exploring. I hope you find re-tooling and enhancing sNews as interesting and rewarding as we have, and that your interest in taking sNews to new levels grows with time. :)
