Multiflex-3 Port for sNews
« on: January 19, 2007, 08:24:21 AM »

I have been hunting around for a good CMS lately, and would be interested in using my own template called Multiflex-3. I have several CMS for closer consideration, such as MODx, WordPress, ExpressionEngine and sNews. I know, they are of very differing complexity levels, but I am checking what they can and cannot do. However, I have no experience with CMS so far, so porting is not my thing yet.

Let's take the three- column option for Multiflex-3 (http://www.1-2-3-4.info/webtemplates/multiflex3/demo/layout4.html)

My questions regarding sNews 1.5 are what could be:

1) ... portable right away
2) ... would need some PHP code twisting
3) ... would not be realistic at all

Looking forward to your comments!
Wolfgang

EDIT: Just got an email from Albert, he seems to be into Multiflex-3 already.

Welcome, Wolfgang. To answer your question -- option 2. Porting the template requires some insertion of PHP function calls specific to sNews, but that should be it, I think. If you're interested, have a look at this article if you haven't read it already -- it should give you more info on what's required of an sNews template.

Albert could probably give you a more detailed answer about Multiflex-3. It's a neat template btw.

very smooth template, I don't think it would be that difficult to port to sNews :)

@agentsmith - Yes I read that article earlier already, but was not sure how the more complex parts of Multiflex-3 would fit into that framework.

Well the replies so far seem very encouraging!!!
I have to be careful, otherwise I will fall in love with Ms. sNews before I even have met her ...    ;)

Mhm, I've seen this multiflex earlier on Abe's site I think... Or perhaps his demo site, I'm not sure... Loving it. It's quite obvious you know what you're doing... Hehe, while some of us other ol chums need to think, test, and remake all the freaking time... Really good job, Wolfie.

and to answer your Q's, I have to go with number two like Freddie-boy did... It id portable (hehe.. did turn out funny there) but it will need a bit of  "codetwistin"...

And welcome btw, nice to have you here... Hope you'll stay on. It's always nice to get people who know what they're doing aboard... And a nice weekend to you and the lot here.

Just thinking aloud:

In multiflex, breadcrumbs are displayed with an unordered list, unlike snews and the multiflex sidebar navlinks use definition lists, so snews.php functions will have to be either added or altered to stay true to the design.

line in the looks good for the "pages" function, but the layout would probably break if you add pages. It might be better to hardcode particular pages in that area and use the pages function in the sidebar.

Right sidebar seems like a great page for additional category related content... the css for color and border changes is a nice touch.

The drop down menus and submenus in the sidebar probably won't mean much since embedded subdirectories aren't supported with snews. What would be cool is if the port had submenus display a list of articles under the categories...

Love the design, thanks for pointing it out

Love the template Wolfgang. I haven't looked your source-code over yet (will after this post) but I would agree with several of my fellow sNoozers here... that some PHP code twisting would be needed. But... not much... only within the functions where specific styles may need applying to have the functions display their content properly when called into the index.php file (via their respective php-based function-calling statements). If I wasn't so busy with client projects right now... I'd love to give it (porting) a try myself. :)

Hi there

I am new to sNews but familiar with Wolfgangs Multiflex template.

Currently, I am updating my site to Multiflex 3 and would like to incorporate sNews into it as the CMS.

Does anyone have a completed sNews Multiflex 3 template that they would be willing to share so that I do not have to start from scratch?

Many thanks

Mark

Update
I have seen sight of one Multiflex3 template for sNews but have decided to have a go at writing one myself. If it is any good I will post it up here for you all to see.

I have finished my first template (or it is theme?) based on the Multiflex-3 design which can be seen here and which is now running comfortably on 1.6 (the only change being the rss links).

It is both XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.0 valid.

If people think it is worthwhile I will tidy up the files and post them as a theme in the 1.6 forums.

Any comments are welcome.

Regards
