1.4 BETA .htaccess and real folders...
« on: January 28, 2006, 02:19:45 PM »

I have some objections about the way url rewrites are used...
for example... using /images/ to upload the images limits you of using a real directory images...
same goes for any directory that exists in the snews folder...
If I put snews on my main public_html folder then I cannot use ANY real folders... :/
this is not very good to be honest...

Wouldn't something like this be better?
Code: [Select]

php_value session.use_trans_sid 0

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ index.php?category=$1 [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+)/ index.php?category=$1&title=$2 [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^([a-z_]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/ index.php?category=$1&title=$2&commentspage=$3 [L,QSA]

if you understand what the problem I am suggesting is and you are willing to test this PLEASE try and find out the good and the bad sides of the two .htaccess files and post them here...
If you don't understand what the difference/problem is then just ignore this thread! ;)

this will introduce problems like:
http://analyzerx.noodles.gr/~projects/sNews/1.4_BETA+install_1.0_BETA/images/

for example if the name of a category and the name of a real folder are the same then we are @#!$$ (we have a problem! o_O)....

is there any way we can do a folder name check on the server? I know this isn't ideal..and I guess we could just advise to be aware of naming categories in the eventual documentation? if we don't go your way that is.. ;)

what do you mean a folder name check?

the thing with the .htaccess as it is now is that NO REAL FOLDER can be accessed!!!!!!!!!!
not just the ones like /login/, /images/ and /new/ but ANY REAL folder is inaccessible...
