"Read more" option does not work properly
« on: November 21, 2006, 02:00:10 AM »

Hi everyone,

First I have to say this is a really great cms!

Here's the problem:

I created several new articles all of which have [break] at some point or another withint the text. They were all created under Home category to be shown on the front page.
But some of the Continue reading or read more links do not work. Instead od taking you to the full article it just directs you back to the front page.

I can't figure out what's going on, I'm a newbie with PHP and CMS.  What I did notice, whether or not it's of any relevance, is that it happens to every other articles. Maybe it's something to do with odd or even numbers???

Anyway, please help, I really love this CMS and I put great effort in making the template more or less respectable.
here's the link
http://www.hucuk.hr/news/ (it's an NGO for IBD patients in Croatia)

Thanks in advance

p.s. I apologize if you have already discussed this problem somewhere in the forum but I just can't find it.

Hi and welcome woker... Hope you'll have a nice stay and that you will be staying here with us. It seems to me that you've fixed it, as I did go there just now and I do see articles when pressing "continue"... ?

Patric.

Hi worker and welcome :)
What exactly seems to be the problem? I've just visited your site with FF and found no problem regarding your "read more" issue.

thanks for replying so quickly...

I didn't fix the problem. It just seems to happen with some links.
Before I switched to sNews I used Mambo, so now I'm copy pasting the content.
Mambo has an option to view a page in html - so I basically copied this code into the textarea of articles because it was already formatted.
Maybe this was my mistake, maybe I should have cleaned up the code before saving the article, but the preview section showed a perfectly nice article. One article I did edit and clean up all unnecessary
and

codes, but no effect.

Here are the links that do not work:

In the pages menu on the left the link named 'PREHRANA'
Among the articles on the frontpage:
'Prostor HUCUK-a'
'Poziv na predavanje u Zagreb'

I really don't know where to look for the problem, maybe I should try deleting them and start over??

thanks again

I think I might have fixed the problem now.
I just renamed the articles
pages (left menu):
Prehrana > O prehrani
articles:
Prostor Hucuk-a > Novi prostor Hucuk-a
Poziv na predavanje > hucuk poziva na predavanje

and now it all works!

I really don't know what to say
it must have been divine intervention

Still, it must be some kind of bug, maybe it's not just a coincidence that all the faulty links had titles that began with the letter P?? They all work now that I've renamed them. I tried renaming o prehrani back to prehrana but the problem returned.

To be more precise the problem obviously was NOT with the read more link but with.... the inability to view the whole page or article because links that should have taken you to them - just redirected you to the front page.

All the above mentioned links that did not work, if you clicked them it would just direct to home page.

Thanks guys

Some visitors of my site reported similar problem.

May it be a browser problem and/or technical detail in sNews which is not understood with certain browser settings?

this isn't good, naturally... Although it comes as a big surpize to me... Never heard of this before, and I can't say that I can, in anyway, make this happen on my 8 snews 1.5 sites... I stand dazzled and stunned :(

Hey... Pat and Mika... I seem to remember we DID have a problem with the letter "P" in titles in the first RC release of 1.5... and I thought you have solved it in the subsequent releases that followed. I know there was at least one topic posted on this subject somewhere on the forums... called a bug with p (thanks baker...) so let's search for it.
More Notes: - The "P" bug referred to here was fixed after the first 1.5 release and are present in RC2 (1.5.27) or RC3 (1.5.28). The patch simply added an underscore after the p in the paginator language variable. The underscore is present in both RC2 and RC3.

@ woker7... If you experienced the "P" bug in your titles, are you using the first issue of snews 1.5 - the 1.5.26 version?

i'm using this version:

        sNews 1.5.28 RC3
   Last modified: 30.10.2006.
   Copyright (C) 2006 Solucija.com

But I figured out what the problem was - I copy pasted the Croatian translation of the language variables and didn't check.
In the translation
$l['paginator'] = 'p'; instead of 'p_'

so it was my mistake in the end.   :D

Thanks a lot guys for your efforts to solve the problem.  :)

OK... I am behind the 8-ball on fully testing sNews 1.5 (now the RC3 version).
Question: How is the [break] function supposed to work? Is it supposed to do what the character limit function used to do in sNews 1.4 - create a break-point with a "read more" link to the rest of the article? If so - it does not appear to work for me.

When I click the "break" button below the textarea, it inserts the open & close break tags. If I insert both tags after the first paragraph in an article... the whole article still displays. If I wrap all paragraphs (after the first paragraph) in between the open & close break tags... the whole article still displays. No matter what I do the article does not "break" after the 1st paragraph and no "read more" link appears in the info-line below the article.

Obviously I am missing something here. Any clarification would be appreciated.
