I for one would also rather see subpages than sub categories... ;)... And I would also like to see more of Nicole here on the board...and any other girl for that matter... But that might not be an issue in this debate...perhaps ;)

Thanks Patric! Thanks Luka!
'Making unlimited subcategories if fairly easy as adding one extra field in the database to contain the id of the parent category.' - what a beautiful phrase!  Thats it!

I've created unlimited categories feature some time ago, but you should be aware of some facts first:

- there are several methods available to create parent-child structure and I've chosen the simplest and the smallest one (recursive function)

- drawback of that approach was slower routine (and the whole engine as well), especially in situations when there is level 4 child applied or more
Quote
category1
-subcategory
--subcategory
---subcategory
----subcategory
category2
-subcategory
- etc..
- other changes to the core includes new navigation system, breadcrumbs, category management, article management (plus 2-3 new functions to patch it all together)

- mod_rewrite behavior is untouched; link appearance doesn't follow parent-child structure
you don't get this kind of structure
Quote
http:/domain/category/subcategory1/subcategory2/..etc.../article/
the old appearance is preserved instead
Quote
http:/domain/category/article/
http:/domain/subcategory1/article/
http:/domain/subcategory2/article/
because htaccess recognizes all subcategories (children) as category. I'm aware of potential SEO issues here, but another recoding (of the same scale as unlimited categories) would require substantial amount of time.

Thank you, Mika, for a good answer!

Maybe subcategories isn't an issue at all. Simply I need links like that:
http://domain/category/subcategory/subcategory/../topic-name.html
or (just example)
http://world.com/america/usa/california/san-francisco/lombard-street.html

DUDES !

SubCats and/or SubPags would bring sNews to another level. Seriously, I'd like to have that feature implemented, at least in the testing stage for the first time (although I'm sure everyone would support such an addition ! ).

Of course that would be smth like Mika wrote:
Quote
http:/domain/category/subcategory1/subcategory2/..etc.../article/
but, yeah, a lot of recoding will be needed anyway...

There's a simple solution for this. With CSS you can display your categories in several levels. That is if you know how to use multi level unordered lists. You just manually dislpay links.
I'll let others respond too and if we agree that sNews should have subcategories I'll include it in the engine.
Exactly... what I was trying to say above (in too many words). Best to wait for this to be included in the engine.

As bakercad notes... where ya been for the last 32 posts Mika? The discussion was good to have never-the-less. I was going to spend the rest of my day exploring the sub-cat idea some more but I'll leave it up to you and Luka since you have "already travelled farther than I" down this path and you guys know more about how to make it work than the rest of us ever will. :)

It's exactlly what I need right now, I'm working on a site, that will start to get huge with content, and I will need an easier/classy why to display the links. I have already started on the design, and I don't want to change it. And the way it is now, it uses nested list. So rawk!

Subcategories would come handy as it's common structure to organize info around. Just categories seems little bit too simple as it unavoidably results in too much top level links to be really useful.
Don't care too much for any fancy navigation but ability to group articles on any category page by subcategories would be very appreciated.

So, any progress with subpages? Anyone?

We shall see what happens, I'm determined to use Snews For this project, and I only have untill January 1st. I may just end up hard coding the main navigation, It really wont change, just the content on the pages it points too. Seems easy in my head, I will let you all know how it goes. :)_

i didn't mean to craete such a discussion! i think in 1.4, when i made this...i never made real sub-categories...it was a menu trick to simple ordering system. display a category...loop through any categories that list the above category as its parent etc etc . css could do this, but i dont think css could order it right perhaps?

once i get my head around 1.5, i could make it if people do want it. ive been insanely busy recently finishing off my uni course, and now have a bit of spare time.

thank you mika!!!
