Need some feedback on a theme.
« on: March 27, 2011, 04:32:37 PM »

So I took the Aqueous theme for 1.7 and modified it a bit but I am horrible when it comes to themes or any type of design work due to having partial color blindness and because of this I need some feedback from those with accurate eyes. ;)

So here's what I've come up with:
Red
Red with rounded corners
Less red (can do with rounded corners also).

This is actually the first time I've created a theme or even used a theme with rounded corners so I'm not sure how I feel about them. Keep in mind that I developed the themes using Chrome so I will have to do some compatibility testing to make sure everything looks right in all browsers.

So what do you think? I like the red mainly because it's my favorite color and the majority of my websites use lots of dull colors like grey, silver, light blue, etc... so I wanted to try something new. Any feedback is appreciated so don't hold back. ;)

If you want a live demo here's a link to my WIP: sNews
And you can compare it to what I've got now to see how much of a different direction I am taking: Current site

I like the colors in the current http://www.jmd.cc/portal.php  -  of the new options, I like http://jmd.cc/snews/normal.png  -  maybe add splashes of color to the current site?

I really don't want to port over the new site to sNews though. :(

I am not sure how brutal you want... you did say don't hold back....

I don't know, I think the red is almost too overpowering.  (red & rounded)
The RSS logo is reddish...
The page indicator doesn't stand out of the red...
The handwritten logo doesn't fit with the rest of the site.
The bottom article hr graphic seems out of place too.
IMO the sidebar should align with the top border of the page/article header - below the breadcrumbs
Search seems out of place... blue button... not the red one on your site?

Take a peek at one of your other sites for guidance with flow, colors, balance, and type spacing:

Thanks for the feedback. The pictures I posted were just ideas I had. So far based on the feedback I've received from a handful of people, the current theme (http://jmd.cc/snews/) has been adjusted based on the suggestions I've heard.

I don't know, I think the red is almost too overpowering.  (red & rounded) My wife pointed this out to me also so I am no longer making red the main focus of my theme.
The RSS logo is reddish... I really liked the red RSS logo but I couldn't find a decent red icon for Facebook or Twitter so I went with blue instead.
The page indicator doesn't stand out of the red... I'm not sure what you mean by "page indicator"... please explain.
The handwritten logo doesn't fit with the rest of the site. I will work on getting another one made, graphics are usually the last thing I work on for a website.
The bottom article hr graphic seems out of place too. Fixed... I hope. :)
IMO the sidebar should align with the top border of the page/article header - below the breadcrumbs Fixed, took a few screenshots to get it lined up perfectly but nothing a lil padding couldn't fix. :)
Search seems out of place... blue button... not the red one on your site? I fixed this already, the pictures I posted didn't reflect this.

2.The RSS logo is reddish... I really liked the red RSS logo but I couldn't find a decent red icon for Facebook or Twitter so I went with blue instead.

I numbered the point so things don't get mixed up:

0. Based on one of your responses that graphics is last, I wold focus there, even css colors too. Just set the site good first, then define a color pallete, then you can apply colors/graphics later.

1. If the site you linked is the changes based on feedback, then the red is still too overpowering - see point 0.  You can use the original template as a guide as well: http://www.free-css.com/assets/files/free-css-templates/preview/page20/aqueous-light/
2. see point 0 (some hand drawn type to match the logo if you keep it: http://iniwoo.net/freebies/social-media-icons/)
3. the icon above the home link in the top menu, and onhover
4. see point 0
5. see point 0
6. better, but now there is a weird menu showing open all/close all... out of place and is it really needed?  Also the content needs to shrink or the margin right needs to expand, there is an overflow of content that meet or overlaps the border
7. Same margin/padding issue as #6. Also it doesn't match the free domain search, so consistency is off.

New:
8 The article text/spacing looked alot better here: http://jmd.cc/snews/normal.png than the live site.
9. Consistency with fonts is key as well. The live site *appears* to be using 4-5 fonts?

0. I will start working on the graphics tonight now that the backend code is pretty much done.
1. I've removed all of the red. ;)
2. Do the blue icons go well with the black nav background?
3. I think it stands out nicely with the black nav background. I thought it stood out to much in the red though.
4. I made a few attempts but no luck, will try again tonight.
5. I like the new one much better. I would like for it to be smaller but it's not that big IMO.
6. Fixed. :)
7. The search and the side menu both line up on the right side. As for the consistency issue, that is out of my control because I dislike the one in the iframe and have no control over it. :(
8. The only thing I changed was remove the font family from the style.css so it used the same font family from body.
9. The only font I changed from the default style.css was the one you said I should change back to a different one. :P

Thanks, I've never checked whether or not my HTML was "valid" before and not to worried about it now. ;)
